NAIL- Specification of Letters Patent.
FELE.
Patented July 3, 1906.
Application filed March '7, 1905. Renewed May 26 1906. Serial No. 318,953.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST HENKEL, a
. citizen of the United States of America, residthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to nail-files, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively s1mple inexpensive device of this character in which the file or blade may be readily folded into its handle when not in use and one wherein the blade may be readily opened for use and maintained rigidly in its open position.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the file embodying the in-.
vention, showing the same in open position. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the device folded. Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section, the section being taken centrally and longitudinally through the handle. I
Referring to the drawin 1 designates the handle, comppsed, prefera l of sheet metal and folded t oughout its length at its transverse center to'produce a pair of spaced side plates 2 and a rigid connecting portion or ack 3, the side plates being recessed, as at 4, at a point adj acent the rear end of the handle. Pivotally connected with the handle -1 is a file-blade 5, of any appropriate form and material, having an inner end extension 6, provided with a diagonally-inclined slot 7, avmg a continuous marginal roll and designed to receive a pin 8, entered transversely through and riveted or otherwise secured in the si e plates 2 of the handle at a point adjacent the forward end of the latter, it being a parent from this arrangement that the b ade is slidablyand pivotall at the same time permanently connected wit the handle 1.
In practice when the blade is open; as in Figs. 1 and 3, it will be moved inward relative to the handle until the pin seats at the forward end of the slot 7., thus bringing the adjacent edge of the extension 6 into firm contact with the back 3, whereby the blade will be maintained rigidly in its open position, it being apparent that in order to close the blade it is first necessary to move the latter forward relative to the handle, whereby owing to the diagonal inclination of the slot 7 the inner bearing edge of the extension 6 will move out of contact with the back 3, thus to permit of the blade bein closed. In this connection it is to be note that the inner or pivoted end of the blade is slightly rounded, as at 9, and that the width between the rounded edge 9 and adjacent end of the slot is less than the distance between the pin 8 and back 3, thus ermitting of the pivotal movement of the b ade in closing.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple inexpensive device in which theblade may be readily closed or opened and one wherein when in the latter position the blade will be held rigidly relative to the handle, it being understoodthat in obtaining these ends minor changes in the details herein-set forth may be resorted to without departing from thespirit or scope of the invention. For examo e, while I ave herein described the device as ap licable' to nail-files it will be obvious that the pin-and-slot connection may beemployed in various other instruments equipped with afoldable blade.
Havin thus described the invention, what is claime as new is A device of the class described, comprising a handle having a rigid back and a foldable blade, one of said parts being provided with' an inclined slot having a continuous marginal wall and the other a fixed pin entered through I said slot for permanently attachin the blade .slidably and pivotally to the hen e, said slot a serving .throu hmovements of the pin therein to positive y move the blade transversely into and out of contact with the back of the.
handle.
. 'In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
