Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. WING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Alle gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cues, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cues, such as used in the game of billiards and pool. 5- VIy invention aims to provide a novel form of tip and positive and reliable means for detachably holding the Atip firmly in engagement with the smaller end of the cue. To this end I have devised a tip which is preferably constructed of leather and vulcanized fiber and is held in engagement with the smaller end of the cue by a screw and cement or glue.
In connection with the tip I preferably employ an aluminium cue, and the detail construction of the tip, together with the construction of the cue, will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cue equipped with my improved tip. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the cue, illustrating a modified form of tip. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating a still further modified form of construction. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of a cue, illustrating still another form of tip; and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a screw used in connection with the preferred form of tip.
In the accompanying drawings, l designates a tapering cue of a conventional form, which may be constructed of Wood or ebony; but I preferably construct the cue of aluminium, this construction being fully disclosed as the subject-matter of an accompanying application, wherein I have described a solid or hollow aluminium cue equipped with my improved tip.
The present invention resides in roviding the cue with a detachable tip 2, and) in Fig. 2 of the drawings I have illustrated the preferred form. By referring to said figure it -will be observed that the upper end of the cue is contracted, as at 3, and provided with a ferrule 4. The end of the cue is provided with an opening 5 to receive a screw 6, said screw having an inverted-cone-shaped head 7 and an annular flange or disk 8 intermediate the threaded portion of said screw and the head 7. Prior to placing the screw in engagement with the cue I use a washer 9, which is preferably constructed -of vulcanized fiber. The screw 6 is then rotated into engagement with the cue, the annular flange or disk 8 retaining the washer 9 upon the end of the cue; but it will be observed that the washer is of a greater diameter than the annular flange or disk 8. Prior, however, to placing the screw in engagement with the cue the cone-shaped head is forced into an opening 10, formed in the body 11 of the tip, said body being preferably constructed of leather. In so assembling the different parts of the tip and locking the body 11 of the tip in engagement with the cue it will be impossible for the body to become detached from the cue while it is being used; but to further insure its engagement with the cue I preferably use cement or glue between the outer edges of tically making the washer and the body 11 of the tip one piece.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have illustrated a slightly-modified form of tip applied to a hollow aluminium cue, wherein it will be observed that the annular flange or disk 8 of the screw is dispensed with and that the body 11 of the tip is simply held by the head 7 of the screw and by glue or cement upon the top of the cue. A double-ended screw 1 2 is illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings as retaining the body 11 of the tip upon a cue, said screw being threaded into the body 11 of the tip and into the cue.
Still another form is illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, where it will be observed that the screw 14 is formed integral with the end of the cue 15, and upon said screw is mounted a plurality of washers 16 and tip 17.
I do not care to'confine myself specifically to either of the tips illustrated, although I preferably employ the tip illustrated in Fig. 2, as I have found it to be more durable and serviceable than the other tips.
I do not care to confine myself particularly to the material from which my improved tips the body l 1 of the tip and the washer 9, prac- IOO are made orto the type of cue in connection with which they are used, and such changes in the detail construction of my improved tips as are permissible by the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a tapering cue,` of a screw secured in the end of said cue, a coneshaped head carried by said screw, said screw in the presence of two witnesses.
