Description

No. 823,800. l PATENTED JUNE 19, 1,906. P. W. MERRIWEATHBR.
BRD CLAMP.. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 9. 1906.
BY f
Arron/v5 Ys l V"IIRITRD STATI-1S.
PATENT OFFC. y
i Y BLEU-CLAMP.,
To all whom it may concerns I Be it known that I, FREDERICK WILLIAM IVIERRIWEATHER, a citizen of the United whchdevice may be readily adjusted to beds of various forms.
It is the ordinary custom'in the art to exhibit in sales-rooms the head and foot members of iron bedsteads closely joined together by a short bar which takes the place of the regular side bar of the bed. These bars are heavy and cumbersome and must be made in various sizes to suit the diHerent styles of bedsteads. My invention seeks to provide a clamp which may be universally applied to all styles of metal bedsteads and by means of which two sections of the bed may be strongly but securely connected. I attain this lend by a speciallyconstructed clamp, which will be fully set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate, as an example, the preferred embodiment of my invention, inwhich- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clamp muse. Fig. 2'is an enlarged sectional view of the clamp, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
aand bindicate, respectively, the head and foot sections of the bed, which are provided, as usual, with castings a and b', having therein tapering sockets a2 and b2, adapted to receive corresponding ribs on the side rails. My improved clamp consists of two parallel members 10 and 11, formed, preferably, of stout sheet metal and joined by a diagonal brace 12, one end of which is permanently riveted to the member 11 and the other end of which has a bolt'll therein, which is iitted in a slot 15, formed in the member 10. By this means the diagonal brace 12 may be adjusted on the member 10 so as to permit said members to be adjusted freely toward and from each other, as indicated bythe dotted lines in Fig. 2, allowing the clamp to be applied to various styles of beds. Passing Spcification of Letters Patent. Applicatin filed February 9', 1906'. Serial No. 300,260l
Patented June 19, 1906:
are bolts 16, which have wing-nuts or other equivalent devices 1.7 operating thereon. Thesebolts 16 are adapted to pass through the sockets c2 and b2 in the castings a vand b and to clamp the members 10 and 11 respectively, above and below said castings. Beneath said nut 17 a relatively large washer -18 is arranged, this washer having a diameter greater than the diameter ofthe upper ends of the sockets a2 and b2.
It will be observed that by means of this devicevthe two sections of the bed may be connected with great security and that the parts may be adjusted so as to fit the clamp to any metal bed, the brace 12 giving rigidity to the clamp acting as a thrust between the two members 10 and 11 and owing to its adjustable connection to one of said members, preferably the member 10, said brace may be adjusted to suit the relative adjustment of the parallel members.
Having thus described the preferred form of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent7 is- 1. A bed-clamp comprising two essentially i transversely` through the .members 10 and'll -1 1:
parallel members adapted to extend between the bed-sections, clamping-bolts extending between the ends of said members and adapted to draw them together against the parts of the bed to be connected, and a diagonal brace l extending between said members.
2. A bed-clamp comprising two essentially parallel members adapted to extend between theV bed-sections, clamping-bolts' extending between the ends of said members and adapted to draw them together against the parts of permanently secured to one member and adjustably secured to the other member.
3. A bed-clamp comprising two essentially parallel members adapted to extend between the bed-sections, clamping-bolts extending between the ends of said members and adapted to draw them together against the parts of the bed to be connected, and a diagonal brace IOO the bed to be connected, and a diagonal brace one end of which is permanently secured to one of the members, the other member being formed with a Vslot,`and the other end of the brace hav/ing a bolt adjustable in the slot.
4. A clamp for bedsteads, comprising two v essentially parallel members adapted to extend between the parts of the bedstead to be f .connected and lying on op osite sides thereto, means for clam ing sar members against IIO said parts of the edstead, and a diagonal I 1o the openings in the said fastening castings or lugs whereby to draw said members toward eaeh other and clamp them against the lugs.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speeiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK WILLIAM MERRIWEATHER..
