Be it known that I, JAMEs CRAWFORD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Hangers, ofwhich the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in pipe-hangers; and the objects of my improvement are simplicity in construction and general convenience in the operation of the same.

The invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s, wherein %igure 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing a pipe supported therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the flange and post, showing the band raised and in section and showing the loop detached; and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the hanger.

Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.

A represents the overhead beam, ceiling, &c., to which the hanger is detachably secured. The hanger consists of a metal flange B, integral with which is a hollow post 0, loosely surrounded by a longitudinally-sliding band D, as shown. Near the lower end of the post O is an annular groove O, adapted to receive internal projections e e on the upper end of a semicircular or U-shaped expansive loop or bail E, in which the pipe F is supported when the pipe-hanger is assembled, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper ends'of the loop or bail E above the projections e e terminate as lips e e, adapted to hold the projections e e interlocked in the post-groove C when the parts are assembled and the band D moved downward over the said lips e e, as shown in said Figs. 1 and 2.

In practice I secure the hollow post 0 to the beam, ceiling, &c., by means of a headed screw G, passing loosely through the perforation in the post and screwed into the beam or ceiling, as shown in Fig. 2. The screw G may be of any suitable type, it being shown as a wood-screw.

In using the device I secure the flange B and its post O to the beam or ceiling A by means of a screw or similar fastenin device. The band D is then moved upward on the post 0, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper end of the loop E is then expanded sufliciently to cause the internal projections e c to interlock with the annular groove C on the post C, after which the band D is moved downward on the post sufficiently to inclose the lips e e and cause the projections e e on the loop E to groove 0 on the lower end of the post C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, after which the pipe can be inserted in the loop, or, if so desired, the loop can be in a similar manner closed around a pipe already placed in the desired position.

What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is 1. A pipe-hanger, consisting of a hollow ost having a groove in its lower end comined with an expansive bail or loop, having projections adapted to fit in the groove means extending through the post for securing the same in position, and a band surrounding and longitudinally movable on said post and loop extremities, and adapted to be shifted over said extremities to secure the projections on the loop in said groove.

2. A pipe-hanger consisting of a grooved hollow post, and means extending through the post for securing the same in position, in combination with a continuous locking-band slidably adjustable thereon, and an expansive loop or bail having inward projections adapted to be interlocked with the groove of the post by the adjustment of the said locking-band thereover.

3. A pipe-hanger consisting of a tubular post having a groove therein, a securingscrew inserted in said post, a continuous expansive bail or loop having projections to engage the groove, the projections being located at a distance from the ends of the bail, and a band surrounding and longitudinally movable on the post and over the projections of the bail.

4. A hanger including a cylindrical hollow post having an annular groove at a point removed from one endthereof, a loop member having legs conforming to the shape of the post, the legs of said loop at a distance removed from their ends being provided with ridges adapted to engage said groove means extending through the post for securing the same in position, and means slidable on the post for overriding the legs of the loop to cause the ridges to interlock in the groove.
