Description

@uitrit tuts latent @frn THOMAS J. BARNES, OF CAMBRIDGE, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 82,274, dated September 22, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-YOKBS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. BARNES, of Cambridge, in the county of Henry, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Yoke for Horses and other animals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
Figure 1 is a. top view of my improved horse-yoke.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line m :t3-iig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of my improved horse-yoke, patented November 5, 1867, and numbered 70,502, so as to make it more convenient and eiiective in operation; and it consists in the construction of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A andB are the parts of the yoke. C are the short chains. D is the equalizing-bar, and Eis the draughtchain'. F Aare the hames. G are clips, which are attached to the parts of the hames to which the llames-rings are-usually attached. The parts of the clips Gpass through the hannes F, and through small plates, H, attached to the front and rear sides of the hames, as shown in tig. 3, and are securely riveted, or otherwise secured, in place. The parts of the clips GV are at such a 'distance apart as to receive the end'of the parts A and B ofthe yoke between them, where said ends are secured in place by bolts or pins I, which pass through holes in the `said clips, and through holes or slots in theV ends ofthe said parts A and B of the yoke., The pins Ishould be connected with the hames F by short leather strings or other iiexible connections, so that they may not belost should they be accidentally dropped. The ends of the parts A andB should {t into the clips G, and the curved ends of said parts, where they leave the said clips, should be bent or curved downward, so as to bring the said curved parts out of the way of the horses necks. The straight portion of the part, as B, which is below the straight portion of the other or upper part, as A, should be bent or curved downward, `at the angle or eye where the short chain C is attached to it, and also at the point where it leaves the clip G, so that the straight portions of the said parts A and B, and the short chains C, may work freely, and without chang or wearing each other.
The short chains C and the equalizing-bar D are secured to the parts A and B of the yoke by hooks, hooking u into the eyes at the angles of the said parts, so as to be very conveniently attached and detached.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Connecting the parts A and B of the yoke to the haines F by means of the clips G, constructed and attached to said hames, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. Forming holes or slots in the ends of the parts A and B of the yoke, to adapt them to the clips G, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. Bending or curving the curved portions of the parts A and B downward, as they leave the clips G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. Bending or curving the straight portion of the part A or B, which is below the other, at an angle of said part,y and at the point Where it leaves the clip G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. g
5. Connecting the short chains C and equalizing-bar D to the. eyes of the parts A and Bby means of hooks, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
6. The single draught-chain E attached to the centre of the equalizing-har D, when said chain is used between the horses, as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 80th day of January, 1868.
' THOMAS J. BARNES.
