Our invention. consists in bladed rootstrips for stemnduibincs 'hirined by, liist, the cutting of transverse l'sce-grmivcs in the metal root-strip; second, the insertion of the blades into tlu-ase qicovcs from the face; third, the placing tho with its blades in ii grooved die adapted to retain the bludss and strip in their relutiiw positions fourth, the application of greet .stol'zil pressure-a, so as to grip the bla l. in. he ship and close up the oisspaccs, thus providii'lg a blade carrying strip ready for attachment in any of the usuul ways to the turbine drum or disk.
Our invention further consists i the construction of blmie-rings, hereinafter described.
Referring; to the :iccompnu drzwlings, Figure .l shows an elevation and a section of one of theiorms of blades which may be used, though we do not confine ourselves to this particular form. and elevation of the motel rootstripwith curved transverse grooves or; its Face bei'oie pressure has been uppl to the root-st1'ip. Fig. 2 is on end elevation showing the sec 'tion and relative proportions (e,pproximzitely) of the width oi the blade and root-strip before the application of pressure or hanuncring. blades inserted in the metal root-strip as they appear after pressure has in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4. b SllOWS a plan and uztioiml elevation, of the grooved (lieloi' fixing the blades iiii'uly tnthe metal strip. 5 the bhulcs utshe 2 shows iiplmi been applied in constructing at bladeding according '10 our invention the ends of the blades ere inedeol (h'swn, rolled, or other material, as
described in Patent No. 639,608, and may or in: I not be notched at their roots to give a, be holding power. The blades are of a form as shown in Fig. 1 and are inserted into the transverse curved notches a of a metal root-strip b, Fig. 2. These notches in the metal root-strip are cut in it by an oscilletiiig cutter, as described in Patent No. 548,010, or b y conical cutter which is prelcizibly'imule thicker at the tips of the teeth than at the roots to give clearance, or they may be n'isde in any other well-known way. l,he width of the root-strip 0, Figs. 1 to 2 may be greater than that ol the blades; The
strip, with thebledesinserted in it, is then.
placed in grooved die d, Fig. l, and is pressed or hammered so as to cause the metal strip to fill up the air-spaces and grip the roots of the blades" firmly. Pressure for eilccting this may be conveniently applied to plate 0, bearing upon the strip. An important advantage oi this method of menulecture that the dies prevent the blades 'p from changing their relative pos sitiois while the blades are being secured in the strip. After securing the blades in this manner the bladed strips are removed from the die and inserted into grooves, Fig. 5, dovetailed or otherwise prepared for their reception in the drum or casing and firmly fixed in plece by celking the metal f in the strip 0, Fig. 3, which intervenes between the blades. Sometimes a calling-ring 9, Fig. 6, is insei'ted in'the groove along with the strip, in which case the metal between -the blades may or may not be calked.
.lrlevuig now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters tent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined holding ring with blades therein swagcd together into one substantially integi-el structure.
2. As sv new article of manufacture, a combined holding riug with blades therein Swag-ed together into one substantially integral structure with substantially smooth and parallel sides.
, the roots lie along the bottom of'the grooves a'flow of the metal of the strip to uniformly tached'bladed ring for turbines having blades 3. As a new article of manufacture, a del and held in said grooves by pressure due to grip the roots of the blades, the whole bladed strip being then ready for insertion in the turbine-drum Without further calking of the strip for the purpose of securing the blades.
5. A bladed strip for turbines havin grooves, blades located in the grooves and held in place by the metal between the roots of the blades, which metal is swaged by means of pressure appliecl'transversely of the 20 strip, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
