Description

No. 821,439. PATENTED MAY 22, 1906. N. SMITH.
CATTLE GUARD FOR RAILWAYS.
APPLICATION FILED $313.14. 1906.
UNITED STATlEg PATENT OFFTGE. NATHAN SMITH, or ELEIQBN, MONTANA. oaT'rLE-euAaD FOR RAILWAYS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May 22. 1906.
]0 all whom it rim/y concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN SMITH, a' citizen of the United States, resi ding at Garrison,
to prevent the passage of cattle and, further-- more, to provide an effective surface guard, which will permit of repairs to the same without disturbing more than the tie which itis desired to replace or repair or one section of the guard.
The invention further aims to provide a oattle guard designed for use in connection with road-beds andwhr'chshall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to set up.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel CO1 bination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention; but it is to, be understood that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cattle-guard constructed in accordance with this invention and arranged in operative relation with respect to a railway-track bed, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cattle-guard.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 2 denote the track-rails, which are secured upon the ties 3 in a known manner, and interposed between the track-rafls 1 2 is the intermediate section of the cattle guard, and the said intermediate section comportion 4. The vertically-extending portion 4 of each of the guard-plates of the intermedi ate sectionis secured by the holdfast devices 6 to one side of the te in such a manner that the elongated flat port, on 5 w. ll extend above and over the tie and toward the verti-. cally-extend-ng portion 4 of the adjacent guard-plate Owing to the-manner of constructing and setting up the guard-plates of the intermedj ate section, the elongated portion 5 of each guard-plate becomes a spr'ng member, so that when the cattle tread on the portions 5 they w, ll descend; but owing to the length of sa? d portions 5 the feet of the cattle will be prevented from be'ng wedged between the elongated portion 5 of one guardplate and the vertically-extending portion 4 of the adjacent guard-plate.
Secured to the ties 3 at each outer side of the track-rails 1 2 and in transverse alinement with the guard-plates of the intermediate section is a series of outer guard-plates 7, which are secured to the ties by the hold fast devices 8. and which are substantially of the same construction as the guard-plates of the intermediate section. Therefore it is thought unnecessary to specifically describe the guard-plates of the two outer series of guard-plates.
At both ends of each series of guard-plates protecting members 9, 10, and 11 are provided and which are adapted to prevent anything from the cars injuring the guard-plates. These members are secured by the holdfast devices 12 to the supports or ties 13. The protecting members 9, 10, and 11 are arranged in close proximity to the verticallyextending portion of the guard-plates, and the said members 9, 10, and 11 are beveled. The members 9, 10, and 11 are adapted to prevent anything dragging from the cars injuring the guard-plates.
Interposed between the ties 3 of the trackbed, to which the guard-plates are attached, are the filling members 19, which are secured in position in any suitable manner and are adapted to keep the ties 3 from shifting, thereby preventing any disarrangement of the guard-plates when the cattle-guard is set up in operative position.
It will furthermore be evident that a device constructed in a manner as hereinbefore described sets up a smooth surface guard and willnot clog with snow under ordinary circumstances but in case of any foreign mat ter, such as snow, getting under the plates or ICC the longitudinal section they are easily raised and the foreign matter removed. Furthermore, the plates can be readily kept in working order, and when the plates are in operative position they will prevent the animal from crossing the track-bed.
Having thus fully described. my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cattle-guard comprising an intermediate section consisting of two series of guardplates, andtwo outer series of guard-plates, the guard-plates of each series consisting of a vertically-extending portion and a right-angularly-extending portion.
2. A cattle-guard embodying an intermediate series of guard-plates and two outer series of guard-plates, each plate of each series of plates consisting of a vertically-extending portion and a right-angularly-extending portion arranged over and extending from the tie to which said plate is secured, and means for securing the vertically extending portions of the guard-plates to railway-ties.
3. A cattle-guard comprising an intermediate section consisting of two series of guardplates, and two outer series of guard-plates, the guard-plates of each series consisting of a vertically-extending portion and a right-angularly-extending portion, combined with beveled protecting members arranged at each end of each series of plates.
4. A cattle-guard embodying an intermediate series of guard-plates and two outer series of guard-plates, each plate in each series of plates consisting of a vertically-extending portion and a right-angularly-extendingportion arranged over and extending from the tie to which said plate is secured, means for securing the vertically-extending portions on the guard-plates to railway-ties, and means interposed between the ties to which the guard plates are secured for preventing spreading of the ties.
5. A cattle-guard embodying an intermediate series of guard-plates and two outer series of guard-plates, each plate of each series of plates consisting of a vertically-extending portion and a right-angularly-extending portion arranged over and extending from the tie to which said plate is secured, and means for securing the vertically-extending portions of the guard to railway-ties, combined with beveled protecting members arranged at each end of each series of plates, and means interposed between the ties to which the guardplates are secured for preventing the spreading of the ties.
n testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NATHAN SMITH,
Witnesses J. H. AKrNs, E. K. HoLTz.
