IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-HEATERS FOR STEAM-GENERATORS.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Bo it known that 1, James -W. Sorrow, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Circulating Water-Heater; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.

The object I have. in view in this invention is to construct a cheap and economical heater of water, to be used more particularly in keeping the water in the boilers of steam firc-cnginesat so high a temperature that very little if any time need he lost in raising steam whenever required. It may .be usefully attached to boilers of all kinds, where steam is not constantly required, and consists of a small uprighttubular boiler, surmounting a proper fire-box, with an annular water-space extendin gn'c arly or; quite down to the grate-bars in the fire-box. Surmounting this boiler is a jacket enclosing an air-spaee,-and provided with proper openingsfor the admission of air between the boiler and the annular water-chamber, which is attached to and above the jacket. The smoke-stack or funnel passes through the jacket and the water-chamber, and is' surrounded by an annular air-space, connecting with the openings in the jacket, and cxtendin'g'to the top of the water-chamber. The water-chamber and boiler are connected by two water-pipes, properly provided with suitable three-way cocks and check-valves, so arranged that the water is kept in continuous motion between the boiler and waterchamber and the boiler of the steam fire-engine, when attached thereto.
Having'thus .explaincd the object, I will now describe the construction of my invention, and name its various parts, so that those skilled in the art can build my circulating wnter heater, especial reference being had to the drawings. 7 Y i A is a small upright tubular boiler, provided with a suitable fire-box, B, and water-space C, cxtending to the grate-bars D. Upon the top of this boiler is placed an ordinary smoke-stack or funnel, E, surrounded by an annular air-space, F, extending from the jacket G, which is provided with proper openings, H, through and to the top of the annular water-chamber I, which surmounts the jacket G, andis provided with a proper opening and cover, J, into which to pour water to keep it filled when necessary. i
K is an ordinary water-cock, through which to draw hot water if required.
L are water-pipes, the one extending from near the top of the water-chamber l, and connecting with the boiler A, near its top, while the other forms a similar connection between the boiler and water-chamber, near their bottoms. These pipes are provided with properchec'k-valves, M, to govern the direction of the flow of the water through the pipes, and are also provided with proper three-way cocks, N, to cut oii the flow of water in any direction.
0 are stationary connections, by which to attach the apparatus to any boiler, which should be also supplied with proper pipes to assist in making such connection. I

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The air-space wit-bin the jacket G, when connected with the annular air-space F,,and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2.' The combination of theabove-named parts with the boiler A, water-pipes L, check-valves M, three-way cocks N, stationary connections 0, and escape-pipe P, when areanged, constructed, and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
