TO ALL WHOM IT MAYCONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEWIS B. Ecken, of Union Bridge, in the county of Frederick, `and State ofMyland, have Vinvented a new and, useful VImprovement'in Stave-Jointing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact descriptionrthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In-Vthe accompanying drawings-- Figure 1 is a front view of my machine. i Figure `2 isa horizontal'se'ction ofthe same, h'e section being made, on the line we: of fig. 1.
improvements in stave-jointing machines may be arranged upon any suitable frame A.
rods C, the-joint beingma'de adjustable by means of the slide D, in Order t give the plane any desired Obliquity of motion, and thusmeke the stave'ot` any degree of bilge that may be required. l By thisy arrangement the bits. cut froml the centre of thestave toward each end. The plane receives .areciprocating motion from the reciprocating I evfer E, which, Vin tnr'n, is moved by a crank-pin carried by the shaft G, which may also be employed'to operate the saw H, as shown.l i
, Theplane and the guider-rods' are arranged up'on the gate L, which may be raised Or lowered bymeans of screw-rods Mandnuts N, fig. 1, thusl raising or lowering the plane, and onsequently bringing a. different part of the edge ofthe bit to work in cutting. V Y p Ido no t broadly claim a carriag'efbed for moving the stave up to the planes, and I am aware that stops have been used to limit the advance ofthe stave toward the planes, but I believe it is new to employ a swinging bed moved by hand, and having gauge-stops behind the bed, thus gauging both ends of the stave to 'one width before the second plane begins to cut..
l Having thus fully describedmy invention, I claim-,If z V I The combination of the plane B, arranged in the adjustable gate or frame L as described, with the swinging carriage-bed I, and the stops O, substantially as set forth. r 4 4 LEWIS B. EGKER.
