v HARNESS ASADDLE. Arrnxomxon Hman snm. s. 1905.
- UNITEDl STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WILLIAM GARDNER, OF JARRATT, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR 'IO l. L. L. `POND AND W.'T. POND, OF PINOPOLIS, VIRGINIA. j
HARNESS-SADDLE.
Specification` of Letters Patent.'
Patented March 20,y 17906'l .Application led September 6, 19Q5. Serial No. 277,186.
. saddle whereby the traces of the harness will vbe held out of contact with the body ofthe horse, thereby rendering the device particularly adapted for usein plowing or in drawing heavy loads.
One` of the great' objections which have been experienced by farmers has been the side motion given to the plow by the traces coming in contact with the sides of the horse s body. As a result considerable effort is required to keep the plow traveling in a straight line, and at the same time the horses body is often injured because of the rubbing which is produced.v
The object of my invention is to provide means of simple construction which is mounted upon the saddle of the harness and which stands some distance beyond thesides of the horse, where it engages the traces and holds them out of contact with the horses body.
A still further4 object is to provide an attachment of this character which can be adjusted so as to render the same capable of moving upon the saddle or of remaining permanently connected thereto.
Sio
With the above and other objects in vie the invention `consists of certain .novel features of construction -and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention. Y
In said drawings, Figure l is a perspective viewl of a saddle having my' improved attachment thereon, a portion of one of the traces being shown connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the saddle and showing the central portion of the yoke therein, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one end of one of the yoke-sections.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, '1 l are the members of a saddle,l the same being connected by a exible strip 2; Each member has a bracket 8 secured `upon it, in `which is mounted a roller 4. The two rollers constitute supports for a yoke consisting ofsimilar oppositely-disposed,members 5 and 6, each of said members being provided with a series of apertures 7 and having at its free end a laterally-extending lug 8, adapted.
lto fit within any of the apertures of the other member. The two' members of the yoke curve downward to form tapered arms 9,
having hooks 10, which are adapted to en-v gage the traces 11 of a harness. A bolt 12 is adapted to be placed within registering apertures of the members 5 and 6, so as to secure them in adjusted position.
Where a device such as herein described is employed, the arms 9 of the yoke will extend to thel sides of the horse at some distance therefrom, and when the traces are engaged thereby'they will be held out of contact with the horses body and will not, therefore, rub it or be movedfrom side to side by the lateral movement of the horses body. Moreover, the yoke is capable of moving longitudinally upon the rollers 4, so as to further reduce or obviate the side movement of the traces. The arms can be adjusted from or toward each other by removing the bolt l2 and. placing the lugs 8 into any of the apertures 7, after which the two members of the yoke can be again clamped together by means of the single bolt 12. Should it be desired to prevent longitudinal movement of the yoke upon the saddle, the. pivot-bolts 13 of the rollers 4 can be removed and instead extended into apertures 7, so as to secure the yoke rigidly to the saddle.
It will be seen that this device is ver desirable for use in' lowing or wherever a orse is required to puff a heavy load, and the entire yoke can be made of very light metal, and the attachment can be readily applied to harness ordinarily used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a harness-saddle; of brackets secured thereto and a longitudinally-extensible rigid yoke movably mount- ICO ed within and extending through the brack- 2. The combination With a harness-saddle having brackets thereon; of a longitudinallyextensible rigid yoke projecting through the brackets and adaptedto engage the traces of the harness.
3. The combination With a harness-saddle having brackets thereon; of a longitudinallyeXtensible rigid yoke slidably mounted Within and extending through the brackets and adapted to engage the traces of the harness, and means for rigidly securing the yoke in eX- tended position.
4. The combination With a harness-saddle having brackets thereon; of a rigid yoke mounted Within the brackets and adapted to engage the traces of a harness, said yoke comprising oppositely-disposed, similar members adjustab y connected to extend or shorten
