Be it known that I, JULIUS MALTBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Fastening Device for Mens Garters; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

My invention relates to an improvement in the corner plates of fastening devices for mens garters, the object being to produce at a low cost for manufacturea simple, compact, and neat corner-plate constructed with particular reference to improving the set of the webbing, to permit, if desired, the webbing passing around the leg to be made wider than the webbing used to make the depend ing loop from which the clasp is suspended, to avoid the discomfort attending the use of a large corner-plate, to avoid unequally straining the webbing, as results from roving it through the corner-plates now generally used, and to secure an economy in the use of webbing by providing for the use of short ends.

With these ends in view my invention consists, as a new article of manufacture, in a corner-plate having certain details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

In carrying out my invention as herein shown I em loy a corner-plate 2, triangular in general f brin (butterfly shape might be more accurately descriptive) and having an upper straight-sided slot 3 and a lower straight-sided slot 4, located at an angle a little less than a right angle to each other, the upper slot 3 being slightly inclined from the vertical to correspond to the slight downward pitch of the adjustable end 5 of the garter-webbing 6, which passes through it as well as through a slide 7. This will be readily understood when it is remembered that the middle portion of the garter-webbing is lifted somewhat by passing over the upper end of the calf, from which, indeed, the garter is virtually suspended. The lower slot 4 is arrangedhorizontally for the reception of the separate short loop 8 of webbing, to the lower end of which the clasp 9 is, applied. This clasp, which grips the sock, may be of any approved construction. The cornerplate 2 is struck up from the back at a point between and about midway the length of its slots 3 and 4, so as to form a circular boss 10, having a central perforation 11 for the reception of the shank 12 of a small eyelet having a body 13 and a rim 14, the shank 12 being upset within the boss and upon the back of the plate, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to form a retaining-flange 15, which is located entirely within the shallow recess 16, resulting from the striking of the plate 2 from rear to front to form the boss 10. The slots 3 and 4 lie close or relatively close to opposite points in the edges of the boss 10, whereby the plate as a whole is reduced to the smallest practical compass. The eyelet constitutes, as it were, a button for the attachment to the corner-plate 2 of the free end 17 of the garterwebbing 6, which is furnished with a fastening-plate 18, having a loop 19, through which the free end 17 of the garter is passed, the plate being struck up from the back to form a slot 20, a trifle wider than the diameter of the body 13 of the eyelet and merging at its outer end into a circular opening 21, a trifle larger in diameter than the diameter of the rim 14 of the eyelet. The metal displaced in forming the slot 20 and circular opening 21 is.

not entirely detached from the plate 18, but struck forward therefrom, so as to constitute a yielding tongue 22, which is slightly sprung as the eyelet is drawn into the slot 20 from the opening 21, and in order that the cornerplate 2 and the fastening-plate 18 may not become disengaged the end of the tongue 22 is preferably struck inward to form a sma hub 23, which springs into the center of the eyelet when the eyelet reaches its home position in the extreme outer end of the slot 20.

I am aware that, broadly speaking, it is old. to employ in fastening devices for mens garters a substantially triangular cornerplate made from a single piece of sheet metal and having two straight-sided slots located at less than a right angle to each other, and also that it is old to employ in suspender castolfs a cast-off plate cut and struck up to form a tongue standing above the plane of the plate over a slot larger in diameter at the base of the tongue than at the opposite end thereof.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a fastening device for men's garters, the combination with a triangular corner-plate made from a single piece of metal and having a single straight-sided upper slot and a single straight-sided lower slot, the former being slightly inclined from the vertical and the latter being arranged horizontally, and the central portion of the plate being struck up from the back about midway the length of the slots to form a circular recess upon the back of the plate and a boss upon the front of the plate which is formed with a perforation passing centrally through the said boss; of an eyelet having a shank, a body and a rim, the said shank passing through the said perforation in the boss and upset within the said recess; and a complementary fastening mem ber constructed to be applied to the other end of the garter-Webbing and adapted to be detachably engaged with the body and rim of the said eyelet.
