To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH LEONHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Anselmo, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented a new and useful Level, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to levels employed by carpenters, masons, and like workmen or mechanics, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corre sponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the princi le or sacrificing any of the advantages of t 's invention within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of a portion of a straight-edge with the improvement applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation illustrating a modified arrangement of the parts.
The improved device comprises a plate 10, preferably annular in shape or with a central transverse aperture 11 and with means, such as curved slots 12 13, for receiving the binding-screws 14 15, by which the plate is attached to a straight-edge, a portion of which is represented at 16. The straight-edge is also provided with a transverse aperture 17 opposite the aperture 11 in the plate 10, and the slots 12 13 are each enlarged at one end to enable the plate to be readily attached to and detached from the straight-edge when required or rotatively adjusted thereon as required. Disposed transversely of the plate 10 and extending across the aperture 11 is a tubular member 18, preferably integral with the plate and open at one end, as at 19. The tubular member is also provided with a longitudinal aperture 20 in the upper side.
The tubular member is designed to support a glass level-bulb 21 of the usual form, which /is inserted through the open end 19 and se-' cured in position by cement in the ordinary manner.
. By this simple arrangement a very complete and accurate level may be constructed by providing an ordinary straight-edge with a transverse aperture 17 and placing the plate 10, with its levelbulb attached, to one side thereof and adjusting the plate by means of the slots 12 13 until the bulb is in the required position.
The straight edge may be made of the cheapest material, such as a section of a board, with one true edge and a socket or aperture to receive the tubular member 18.
The cavity for the reception of the tubular member 18 will preferably extend entirely through the straight-edge 16, so thatthe bulb may be read from either side, or the plate may be reversed in position and attached to the member 16 with the tubular member outward, as in Fig. 3, and without any aperture or recess in the member 16.
When not required, the plate with its bulb attachment can be detached from the member 16 and packed with the owners other tools or implements for transportation. This is one of the material advantages of the improved device, as the workman need not transport a cumbersome and relatively heavy straight-edge from place to place in pursuing his vocation, as by possessing one of the comparatively small and light plates 10 with its bulb-tube attached he can quickly complete the device by constructing the straight-edge portion from otherwise waste material where it is'required to use the implement.
The plate 10 and its tubular member 18 will preferably be cast from one piece of brass, iron, or other metal and may be polished and plated, if required.
