P. E. WALDEN. SUSPENSION BRACKET. APPLICATION FILED APR. 30,1904.
PATENTED FEB. 13, 1906.
' Q FrederickE.Wt/flflen UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE. FREDERICK E. WALDEFITIFTWOROESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
SUSPENSION-BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1906.
Application filed April 30, 1904. Serial No. 205,722.
To 1,1,7] whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. WAF- DEN, a citlzen of the United States, and a resident of Worcester, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspension-Brackets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of said device complete. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same folded into its smallest compass; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device, showing it attached to the side of ahouse and supporting a paint-pot.
The hook 1, designed for the engagement of the bail of a paint-pot or other pail or object, is formed at the outer end of the shank 2, the inner end of which is bifurcated horizontally. Such bifurcations 3 are provided with upwardly-projecting spurs 4, designed to be driven up behind the lower edge of a clapboard. In a split 5 at the junction of said bifurcations is pivoted the brace 10, whose lower end is bent up into a hook 12 and which is formed with the spur 11, projecting downward and rearward from the juncture of said hook and brace. By first driving the spurs 4 up behind a clapboard or similar portion of a building to which it is wished to apply this holder and then pressing the spur 11 into the woodwork beneath the device is ready for use. Ordinarily it is unnecessary to drive the spurs 4 up into engagement with the woodwork, inasmuch as the pressure of a pail depending from the hook 1 is suflicient to cause the spurs 4 and 11 to penetrate the wood enough for security by simply placing the parts in the positions shown.
To disengage the holder from the woodwork, an upward blow applied beneath the hook 1. releases the spur 11 from the wood and may also disengage the spurs 4 at the same time. If not, then a slight downward blow upon the bifurcations after the spur 11 is withdrawn will readily free the spurs 4 from their confining woodwork. Although I have shown this holder as attached to the clapboards of a building, any other part of the structure will serve equally well, provided there is an overhanging ledge of wood, or even brick, into which the spurs 4 can penetrate, and a more or less vertical face for the spur 11. The hook 12 is designed for a ladder or other heavy object to be suspended from, the upper rung of the ladder being caught in said hook and being supported thereon with a strength commensurate with the resistance of the body penetrated by the spur 1 1.
The pivoted end 13 of the brace 10 is somewhat oifset, as shown in Fig. 3, in order to permit said brace to be folded up close to the hook 1 and its shank 2, as shown in Fig. 2. The joint 14 can be made slightly loose to permit the two hooks to bring them into the nesting position shown, or the terminal portion of the hook 12 may be given a lateral bend for the same purpose. With the parts thus folded together the holder is of a more convenient dimension for storage and transportation.
What I claim as my invention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
In a painters hook, the combination of the member having the hook at one end and a pair of upwardly-reaching engaging spurs at its other end, and the brace pivoted between said spurs at one end and having the downwardly-projecting spur near its other end and the large hook; said parts being arranged to permit Said shank to be swung up parallel with said member with its large hook encircling'the smaller hook of said member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of April, 1904.
FREDERICK E. WALDEN.
