Be it known that I, HENRY SToTz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albert Lea, in the county of Freeborn and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective fastening device which is particularly designed for use in fastening the covers of liquor-cases, but which is susceptible of use in various ways to hold the cover or lid of a receptacle closed.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the results reference is to be had to the following description and accomp anying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a box or case, showing the fastener comprising the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastener alone. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fastener applied to a receptacle, which is partially broken away, the engaging member of the fastener being in engagement with the catch and a seal applied thereto.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the receptacle or case to which the invention is shown applied, and this case is provided with a suitable cover or lid 2 removable therefrom. The cover 2 is provided upon its un der side and near its ends with transverse cleats 3, projecting at one end from the rear edge of the cover, so as to engage beneath a longitudinal strip 4 at the top of the case near the back thereof. To increase the substantiality of the cover and its connection with the case, it is preferred to provide transverse cleats 5 upon the upper side thereof and hav ing the ends project from the front and rear portions of the cover, so as to overlap the rear longitudinal strip 4 and a second longitudinal strip 6, which is located similarly to the strip 4, but at the front of the receptacle or case 1.

The fastening constituting the essential feature of this invention is arranged at the front of the receptac1e1 and consists of a catchplate 7, provided with a lateral or horizontal arm 8, extending from its upper extremity and formed at its lower end with a lateral lug 9.

The plate 7 is substantially attached to the inner side of the front of the case 1 by fastening-bolts 10 or the like, and the arm 8 projects ashort distance from the front strip 6 before mentioned, a portion of said armsbeing below said strip. A catch 11 extends upwardly from the outer end of the arm 8 and is formed with a notch or recess 12 in a side thereof, said recess 12 being adapted to receive the engaging member 13 of the fastening. The engaging member 13 comprises an arm extending laterally from the upper end of a shaft 14, mounted in bearings formed by openings in the arm 8 and lug 9 of the plate 7. The shaft 14 is disposed in the case and is parallel with the plate 7, preferably the upper end portion of said shaft passing through a recess at the inner portion of the strip 6 at the front of said case. A coil-spring 16 is fitted about the shaft 14 upon the portion of the shaft above the arm 8, and this spring is connected at the upper end with the member 13, so as to normally hold said member in engagement with the recessed portion 12 of the catch 11.

In actual use when the cover 2 is in po sition upon the case or box 1 the catch 11 passes through a slot 17 in said cover and the engaging member 13 projects over the front portion of the cover into the recess 12 of the catch 1 1, thereby preventing displacement of the cover at the front portion, the cleats 3 engaging beneath the strips 4 at the rear portion of the case or box to effectively prevent displacement of said cover at this portion. The tension of the spring 16 is suflicient to positively hold the engaging member 13 in engagement with the catch 11 and permits ready disengagement of the member 13 whenever it is desired to have access to the interior of the receptacle. It is often desirable in using the receptacle 1 for holding liquors or the like that the same be sealed, and in order to facilitate the above the outer end of the engaging member 13 is provided with a lateral extension having an opening 18 therein adapted to register with an opening in the catch 11, and a wire or similar sealing device 20, such as shown in Fig. 3, may pass through the openings in the extension 18 and catch 11 to seal the case in a manner which will be evident. In opening the case it will be obvious that the engaging member 13, which is pivotally movable because of its mounting, as before described, may be readily turned,

.used and that the engaging member 13 may be so arranged as to turn either to the right or left, according to the desires of the manufacturer and conditions in actual use.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is.

1. In a fastening for receptacles, the combination of a catch-plate, an arm extending from the catch-plate, a lug projected from the catch-plate, a catch extending from the arm aforesaid, a shaft mounted in the arm and lug of the catch-plate, and an engaging member projected from the shaft for cooperation with the catch.

In a fastening for receptacles, the combination of a receptacle, a strip at the front portion of the receptacle, a catch-plate secured to the front of the receptacle, a catch projected from said catchplate, a cover for the receptacle provided with a slot through which the catch aforesaid is adapted to pass, a shaft mounted on the catch-plate and passingthrough the strip aforesaid, and an engaging member carried by said shaft for cooperation With the catch, as specified.

3. In a fastener for receptacles, the combination of a case or box, a cover therefor, a catch-plate applied to the box, a catch proj ecting from said plate and coacting with the cover, a shaft journaled in the catch-plate, and an engaging member projecting from the shaft and arranged to cooperate with the catch to hold the cover closed.
