Be it known that I, JOHN KUGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve- .ments in Protective Attachments for Infants High Chairs, of which the following is a speciiication.

The object of this invention is to provide a protective support or upright for the swinging guard of an infants high chair which shall likewise serve as a lock for preventing the raising by the infant of the swinging guard. The support or upright is located at such a point that it will not interfere with the infants freedom or movement while in the chair, but will effectually prevent the infant from slipping out of the chair and falling to the floor.

The invention is so constructed that it is adapted for use with chairs of the ordinary construction and may be furnished therefor without any appreciable change or modification of the chair whatever.

The invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View of an infants high chair, showing the device of the present invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the upper part of a chair, showing the swinging guard lowered and the protective upright locked; and Fig. 3, a similar view showing the swinging guard drawn back.

The device of the invention is employed in combination with an infants high chair 1, having front legs 2 and back legs 3, and the legs are connected at their upper ends by means of arms 4 in the usual manner. chair is completed by the provision of a seat 5 and back 6 of the usual character. The chair is provided with a swinging guard 7, consisting of side arms 8, pivoted at their rear ends to the upwardly-projecting portion of the back legs 3 of the chair, and the swinging arms areconnected at their free ends by means of a guard-board 9, which likewise serves as a tray or shelf for the infants use.

The device which more especially forms the subject-matter of the present invention is an upright pin or post 10, which is rigidly secured at its upper end to and movable with The the guard-board 9, and at its lower end is adapted to be swung into a socket 1,1 in the forward edge of the side 5 of the chair and locked therein by any suitable means, thou h preferably a spring-loek 12 is employed. The guard post or pin when in locked position extends vertically from the center of the front edge of the seat to the swinging guardboard and is adapted to prevent the infant from slipping down under the guard-board and out of the chair. The legs of the infant are adapted to straddle the guard pin or post and rest upon a foot-rest 13 of the usual character, and the freedom or movement of the infant will be in no wise interfered with, while at the same time the safety'ef the child will be insured. By providing a lock of the character indicated the swinging guard-board and protective post or pin can be locked down to the seat of the chair after the infant has been placed therein, and the device of the present invention obviates the necessity for providing additional locking or fastening means for preventing the raising of the guardboard.

Although a spring-lock has been referred to in the specification, any other suitable locking means may be employed, such as a belt or pin, without departing in any way from the spirit of the invention.

The device can be used on chairs of the ordinary construction, since no change or modification is required beyond the securing of the protective post or pin and the provision of a socket therefor.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with an infants high chair having side arms, a swinging guard provided with a cross guard-board pivoted to the back of the chair and adapted when lowered to rest upon the side arms and a guard post or pin rigidly secured at its upper end, and depending from the cross guardboard to the seat of the chair, and means for locking the lower end of the guard post or pin to the seat of the chair, substantially as described.
