To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DORA MAssEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duncanville, in the county of Dallas, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilting-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to quilting-frames, and. has for its object to provide a frame which will be adjustable to suit different conditions and which will be so constructed that the goods to be quilted may be attached thereto without the necessity of sewing.

A further object is to provide a quiltingframe which may be folded to occupy little space when not in use.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials may be used Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the quilting-frame. Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing a portion of the quilt cut away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of one of the fastening-bolts. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 of Fig. 1.

Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises four members 5, 6, 7, and 8, which are pivoted together in pairs adjacent to their lower ends, this pivoting being accomplished by engaging a rod 9 in perforations 10, formed through the members, so that the pairs of members are in alinement and in spaced relation. Each of the members 5, 6, 7, and 8 consists of two slidably-connected portions 11 and 12, each provided with a longitudinal slot 13, which are disposed in registration with each other, and in each pair of these registering slots there is disposed a bolt 14, having a thumb-nut 15, engaged. with its outer end, by which the bolt may be clamped to hold the portions 11 and 12 against movement with respect to each other. The portions 11 and 12 of each of the members are provided with notches 15 at one side of their slots 18, the notches of the con nected pairs of portions being arranged for registration with each other to receive a lip 16, formedv upon the bolt 14, engaged in the slots of these portions, this engagement of the lip with the notches preventing movement of the slid ably-connected portions with respect to each other in addition to the clamping of the bolt. It will of course be understood that the notches 15 are sufliciently wide to permit the bolt to be rotated to bring its lip into or out of engagement therewith.

In the upper ends of the portions 12 of the members 6 and 8, these members being in alinement with each other, as will be readily understood, there is journaled a roller 16, having a longitudinally-extending series of curved pins 17 extending therefrom, and at one end this roller is provided with a ratchetwheel 18, lying against the outer face of one of the members, and pivoted to this member is a dog 19, which lies in engagement with the ratchet-wl'ieel, thus preventing movement of the roller in one direction, Adjacent to the upper ends of the other pair of coinciding members 5 and 6 there is journaled a trans verse roller 18, and above this roller there are formedthrough the members 5 and 7 a pair of alining circular openings 19. EX- tending inwardly from the upper outer corners of the members 5 and 7 are diagonal slots 20, which communicate with the openings 19 for the passage therethrough to the openings of'the ends 21 of a roller 22, which thus lies in a plane above the roller 18. Attached at one end to one of the members of each pair is a chain 23, having a hook 24 at its free end for engagement with a staple 25, carried by the remaining member of each pair, this chain limiting the movement of the upper ends of the members away from each other. The lower ends of the members are beveled, as shown at 26, so that the frame will stand upon a flat surface, and when a quilt is to be quilted one piece of goods is rolled upon the roller 18, a sufficient amount of goods extending from the roller to reach to the roller 16, with the pins of which it is engaged. Another piece of goods is rolled upon the roller 22, the free end of the goods being engaged with the pins 17, and after a sufficient quantity of cotton or other substance with which the interior of the quilt is to be formed is laid upon the first piece of cloth the roller 22 is disposed in the openings 19, the portion of the quilt extending between the rollers 18 and. 22 and the rollers 16 may now be quilted, after which it is rolled upon the roller 16 and the quilting operations repeated. By reason of the fact that the members are pivoted together, as described, the device may be folded to occupy little space When not in use, and the distance between the upper ends of the coinciding pairs of members may be varied by moving the portions 11 and 12 of the members with respect to each other. The rollers 18 and 22 are also provided with attachinghooks 18" and 22, respectively.

What is claimed is A quilting-frame comprising two pairs of members pivotally connected adjacent to their lower ends, each member comprising a lower and an upper portion having alining longitudinal slots which are notched along one edge, a clamping-bolt engaged through each pair of alining slots and having a lip adapted to engage a pair of notches in the sides of the corresponding slots, thumb-nuts engaged with the bolts, said bolts being rotatable with their lips into and out of engagement With the notches, a flexible tie connecting the lower portions of the members at each side of the frame, and fabric carrying rollers mounted in the upper ends of the members.
