The apparatus may be used for transfer ring liquid metal from blast-furnaces or cupolas to puddling-furnaces, open-hearth furnaces or foundries, or for any other operations in which it is necessary to move liquid metal from one place toanother or to keep the metal in liquid condition for any length of time.
The apparatus will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section on the line A A of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view, and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line B B of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, O indicates the body of the storing vessel, and D the cover. The middle portion 1 of the body is semicircular and adapted to receive the liquid metal At each end the bottom is inclined upward, asat 2, and the body terminates in substan- 1 tially cylindrical extensions 3, having mixing and burning chambers as 90 therein. The body comp 'ses a metal shell 4, strengthened by suitable ribs 5 and provided throughout with a refractory *lining 6. In the endsand at suitable points on the sides of the body are burners 7 for producing heat in'the vessel by means of oil, gas, or other suitable fuel which is injected with air into the chambers w and above the molten metal and is burned, the combustion retaining the whole body of metal in a molten condition as lon as required. On the sides of the vessel about midway of its height are discharge-openings 8, provided with suitable pouring-spouts 9.
The lid D is preferably archedand of aconstruction similar to the body of the vessel that is, having a shell 10-, of metal, strengthened by. suitable ribs 11 and lined with refractory material 12. Lugs are provlded on the body and on the lid to receive bolts 13,
by means of which the lid may be securely attached to the body. Other lugs 14 are provided-by means of which the lid may be lifted. In the top of the lid are one or more inlet-openings 15, through which the llquid metal is poured into the vessel. The lid extends over the body portion of the vessel between the inclines 2, and the cylindrical extensions 3 are permanently closed on top.
The apparatus is in the generalform of a car, the body or vessel resting on wheeled trucks 16 17 of any suitable construction and provided with 'a suitable connecting-frame l8 and couplings 19. On a platform extension 18 of frame 18 over each truck is a transverse rack 20, and meshing with this rack is a sector-gear 21, connected with a yoke 22, in which the cylindrical extension 3 0i the body rests. A partial wheel 21, connected with segment 21 supports the yoke 22'and the vessel, The Wheel 21 runson a rail 20 on the platform adjacent to the rack 20. The
body is thus supported by the rails 20, and
Rigidl'y connected to one end of the vessel is a large segmental gear 23, which is turned by a worm 24, the worm being turned by power transmitted through a suitable train of gearing from a hand-wheel or crank 25. The segmental gears 21 and 23 have a common center, (indicated at 26,) and said gears are therefore always in proper engagement with the worm 24 and the rack 20. it Will be understood that the vessel is similarly equipped at each end with yoke 22, segmental gear 21, and rack 20. i
