In construction a suitable base a is provided, which serves to support the operative mechanism of the machine and maintain some of the parts in proper relative arran e- 7o inent. Near one corner of the base a suitable pillar A is erected on the base and secured thereto, and anaxle B is suitably secured to the pillar, so as to extend therefrom horizontally across a portion of the base. Preferably an end of the axle is screwed into a suit able hole in the pillar A, so as to' be'adjustw able endwise, the axle extending through the pillar and having a lock-nut b thereon engage ing the farther side of the pillar. The opposite free end of the axle has a screw 4:, bindinga collar (1 against the end of the axle. A friction-collar e extends about the axle B against the pillar A, and a. sleeve C is rotatively mounted on-the axle, extending from them lar cm the collar (Z. A ratchet-wheel f is secured to the end of the sleeve adjacent to the collar 6, and a toothed gear-wheel g is also secured to the-sleeve adjacent to the ratchetwheel, the latter providing a-fric-tion-s'urface 9o againstwhich the collar e, of. suitablematerial, may act as a brake. In this arrangement the lines will be slightly inclined to the horizontal on I the paper. When it is desired to print a single line on a continuous ribbon of paper, the lever Iwill be held by the shoulder z of the arm J.so that the worm G cannot cooperate with the rackbar w and the stop 28 will be placed against the end of theplaten, the latter thus being prevented from moving endwise, while it may be rotated by the usual operation of the keys and also by means'of the spacing-lever 'M. The results of the operations'of other parts will be understood from the description of their construction.- a
The various elements comprised in the machine may be somewhat modified when manufacturing in large uantities, and in extra large machines with long platens the axle B obviously may be provided with a support at its free end. Additional type-bars may ported by added, if desired.
