Description

No. 809,924. PATENTED JAN. 9, 1906. J. REIGHERT.
COMBINED HARNESS SNAP AND SLIDE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 14, 1905.
JOHN REICHERT, OF RACINE,\VISGONS1N.
COMBINED'HARNESS SNAP AND SLlDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
Original application filed March 3,1905, Serial No. 248,198. Divided and this application filed June 14,1905. Serial No. 265,214.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN REICHERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, Racine county, State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Harness Snap and Slide; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in breast-strap slides and snaps, and this application is filed as a division of my application, filed March 3, 1905, Serial No. 248,198.
An object of the invention is to provide certain improvements in arrangements of parts and in constructions and combinations of elements whereby an efiicient and effective combined breast-strap slide and snap will be produced.
The invention consists in certain features in construction and combinations of parts, as
more fully and particularly pointed out and described hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined snap and slide within the spirit and scope of my invention, dotted lines indicating the breast strap. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the upper portion of the device, taken in the plane of the axis of the pivotal connection between the snap and slide. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view through the slide, showing a portion of the snap-head.
Combined breast strap slides and snaps comprise a slide to receive and slide on the breast-strap of double harness and a snaphook pivotally joined to the slide and adapted to detachably receive the neck-yoke eye or other suitable portion of the harness. and my present invention comprises certain improvements in devices of this type.
In the drawings, 2 is the shank or hook portion of the snap, and this shank is integral with a top U-shaped cross-head, consisting of the cross-piece 3, from which the shank 2 centrally depends, and the two elongated arms 4, extending up from the opposite ends of the cross-piece 3. At their upper ends said arms are formed with the alined transverse eyes 5, having fiat inner faces.
6 is the spring-actuated swinging tongue of the snap held normally closing against the hook-bill by any suitable spring mechanismsuch as coiled spring 7, interposed between the tongue and the upper portion of the hookshank. The tongue can be attached and pivoted in any suitable manner. For instance, I show the cross-piece 3 of the snap crosshead formed with a recess 8, into which the trunnions 9, at the upper end of the tongue, are journaled. These trunnions are confined to turn in this recess by the small lugs 10, bent over the recess and trunnions. However, I do not wish to limit my invention to any particular means for confining or mounting the snap-tongue, nor, in fact, do I wish to limit my invention to employment of a tongue.
The breast-strap slide-frame is cast or otherwise formed in one piece and comprises the transverse bottom plate portions or bars 11, under which the breast-strap passes loosely. The ends of the slide diverge upwardly and can be slotted, about as shown, to form the loops or eyes 12 at the upper extremities of the slide and through which the strap loosely passes and by which the slide is held down in the strap. The slide-frame is formed with the fiat side ears 13, constitutingthe slide side walls, and these ears have alined perforations. The arms at of the hook cross-head extend up beside the vertical faces of the ears 13, and the eyes at the upper ends of said arms 4: register with the perforations in the ears 13. A transverse rivet 14: is passed through the eyes and ears and is suitably headed at its outer end at the outer faces of the eyes to pivotally couple together the slide and hook. The bottom plate of the slide is divided or formed with a central opening between the ears 13, thereby leaving the two side portions 11 of the bottom plate of the slide. The bottom breast strap-engaging surface of the slide is formed by an idler-roller 15, mounted loosely on the rivet 14c and located between the two plate portions or bars 11 and with its ends arranged at the inner faces of the cars 13.
Other means than the rivet might be employed, so far as certain features of my invention are concerned to pivotally unite the slide and hook on an axis arranged above the bottom strap-engaging surface of the slide, and to arrange for the idler-roller on the same axial line.
That I claim is 1. In combination, a snap-hook comprising a shankor hook portion having at its upper end, and integral therewith, the U-shaped cross-head comprising elongated upwardlyprojecting arms with bearing-openings in their upper ends, a breast-strap slide having side ears pivotally confined to said arms, and an idler-roller arranged transversely of the slide and between said ears and rotating on an axis concentric with the axis of the pivotal connection between the slide and said arms.
2. In combination, a snap-hook comprising a shank or hook proper at its upper end having a U-shaped cross-head comprising the of said arms and through the sides of said slide and longitudinally of said opening, and an idler-roller on said rivet between the sides of the slide and said cross-bars, substantially as described.
4. A combined harness snap and slide, comprising a slide-frame having side walls and cross-bars between said side walls and spaced a distance apart, an idler-roller arranged between the side Walls and cross-bars and forming the bottom strap-receiving surface of the slide, and a snap-hook having a top head pivotall y connected with said side Walls, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN REICHERT.
