To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL L. BoYcE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oarroll, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Fence- Post, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence-posts, and has for its object to provide a post embodying new and improved features of durability, simplicity, convenience, and efciency.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a post having improved means for winding and stretching the wire.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for bracing the post against the tension of the wire.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for uniting the units to form a corner-post.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a fence embodying the improved post. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the improved post, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view, partly in elevation and partly in section, showing the stud for attaching the brace and the winding roller. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the lower end of the brace.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In its preferred embodiment the improved post forming the subject-matter of this application comprises a unit composed of the bar 10, bent at the top, as at 11, to form parallel side pieces. At their lower ends the side pieces are united by a strip 12, bent to form parallel ends, inverted or otherwise, secured between the ends of the side pieces, and the ends are embedded or otherwise secured to or upon a base 13, of any approved material, as cement. The side pieces are secured together by a bolt 14 passed through the bars, and thereon is disposed a sleeve 15 between and to space the side pieces apart. Any approved number of the bolts and sleeves may be applied to hold the side pieces rigid, and the wires 16 will be applied by winding a tie-wire 17 about the bars l0 and the wire 16, as shown indetail in Fig. 4.
For use as a corner-post two of the units will be connected, as by the strips 18, embracing the two elements and holding them rigidly with their planes disposed at the required angle to each other. Between the sidebars 10 of the corner-post are disposed the rollers 19, having trunm'ons 20 and 21 journaled in the side pieces and a wire-receiving opening 22 formed transversely therethrough. The trunnions 21 are formed with Shanks 23, squared or polygonal, for the application of a wrench, crank, or other tool to wind the wire, and a socket 24 is formed partly in the bar 10 and partly in the trunnion 20, into which a pin 25 is driven to hold the roller from backward movements.
To brace the corner-post, the bolt 14 near the top is extended and bent at one angle and a collar 26 disposed thereon. The adjacent post is provided with a similar angularly-disposed collar 27 near the bottom, and a tubular brace 28 embraces at its ends the collars 26 and 27 and extends between the posts.
From the foregoing description it is believed that the use, operation, and advantages of the improved post will be fully and clearly understood.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A fence-post comprising a plurality of units each embodying parallel upright bars rigidly connected at the top, Winding-rollers journaled in the bars and serving to space the same, means connecting the units with their planes disposed at an angle each to the other, anda base common to and in which the umts are rigidly secured.
2. A fence-post embodying parallel upright bars, a pin extending transversely through the bars and having one end thereof bent at an angle to the adjacent bar, a sleeve embracing the pin between and spacing the bars apart, a collar engaging the bent end of the pin, and a tubular brace seated upon the collar and extending obliquely to an adjacent post.
