CIOERO HOSKINS, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EMMA J. HOSKINS, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
CHICKEN-COOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1805.
Application filed March 21,1905. Serial No. 251,317.
To (0Z5 whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OIoERo HOSKINS, of Quincy, in the county of Adams, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken-Coops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to improvements in chicken coops, especially brood coops, and has for its object to provide such a coop which can be readily taken apart or knocked down for cleaning or storage and which will afford perfect ventilation and at the same time provide protection for the 'chicken against rats and other'enemies.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, all as will be now described. and the particular features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coop constructed according to the present invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional View at right angles to Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The coop is formed of sheet-metal sections, preferably galvanized steel, the end sections a a and front and back sections 6 5 being preferably substantially rectangular in shape. Each of these sections is provided along-its vertical edges with hooked cooperating flanges a a and I) 6 whereby the several sections may be secured together by sliding said sections in each other, as will be readily under,- stood. At the lower edges each of the sections a a Z) 6 is provided with an upturned flange The bottom section O is of proper size and shape to fit within the space formed by the side and end sections and is formed with a downwardly-extending flange c, which is adapted to fit in between the flanges a and 6 and the body portion of the side and end sections. Thus the bottom will be held securely in place, but may be easily removed when desired.
The top (Z is formed with down wardly-turned flanges d, which fit over the upper edges of the front, rear, and end sections. Any suitable fastening means may be employed for securing the top in place. Thus the end sec tions may be provided with spring-hooks c c, which take over the top (Z, or pendent hooks c 0', carried by the end flanges of the top d, may be employed whose ends enter holes 0 e in the end sections, either or both of which constructions may be employed.
The. front section b is formed with an opening 6* for the passage of the fowls in and out of the coop. Sliding in ways or guides b on the front section is a door or closure 6, formed of sheet metal, by which the opening 6 may be entirely closed. In order, however, that the opening may be closed against the entrance at night of any enemies of the chicken and at the same time provide for the proper ventilation of this coop, a reticulated door or closure Z2 is provided, the amount of ventilation being governed by closing the door Z) more or less, as will be readily understood.
It is frequently desirable to keep the larger fowls from entering the coop or to keep the mother fowl in the coop, as in brooding times, but at the same time to permit the small chicks to go in and out of the coop. For this purpose bars or rods 6, suitably spaced and secured at the ends in holders 6 are provided, which may he slid along the guideways b in: front of the opening If, as will be readily understood. Any suitable locking means may be employed for locking the various closures in closed position, but preferably a pin or bar f is employed, said pin passing through the guideways 6 back of the closure, thus effectually preventing its being pushed back, as will be understood.
If desired, ventilating openings may be provided in the end sections, formed by striking up a portion of the metal of said sections, as shown at g, and to facilitate the handling and carrying of the coop when set up these end sections may also be provided with handles it.
From the above description it will be seen that the coop can be readily set up for use or knocked down for transportation or storage, and being made of metal can be readily kept clean and is not liable to harbor disease germs. It also effectually protects the fowls from enemies, while permitting circulationof air for ventilation, thus keeping the fowls healthy and in good condition.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A knockdown coop, formed of sheetmetal sections, the end, front and rear sections, formed with cooperating hook-flanges, whereby said sections may be slidably connected, and having upturned base-flanges, the bottom formed with downwardly-extending flanges adapted to fit over the base-flanges of said sections, a top section and means for locking the top section in place; substantially as described.
2. A knockdown coop formed of metallic sections, the end, front and rear sections formed with cooperating hooked flanges along their vertical edges, whereby said sections may be slidably connected and formed with upturned flanges at their lower edges and the bottom section formed with a downwardlyextending flange, adapted to lit over the flanges on the lower edges of the end and front and rear sections, and the top section; substantially as described.
3. A knockdown coop, formed of sheetmetal sections, the end front and rear sections formed with cooperating hook-flanges, whereby said sections may be slidably connected, and having upturned base-flanges, the bottom formed with a downwardly-extending. flange adapted to [it over the base-flanges of said sections, a top section and the spring-hooks carried by the end sections, adapted to take over the edge of the top section when in place, whereby said top will be locked in place; substantially as described.
t. In a knockdown coop, the combination of the end front and rear sections and top and bottom sections removably secured together, said front section having an opening therein, guideways on said section, closures for the opening sliding in said guideways, and a pin or bar adapted to be passed through the guideways, to the rear of the closure in front of the opening, wherebysaid closure will be held from movement; substantially as described.
