Description

PATEN'I'ED DEC. 5, 1905.
P. N. AVERY.
VIS E. I APPLICATION FILED HAB;21, 1905.
a ma I Fl k. c
I E v WEEESEE UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
PERcY NUGENT AVERY, 0F GRAPPENHALL, NEAR WARRINGTON,
ENGLAND.
VISE.
To all whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, PERoY NUGENT AVERY, director of companies, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Gra penhall, near Warrington, in the county 0 Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, (for which application has been made in Great Britain, N 0.
23,087, dated October 26, 1904,) of which the.
followingis a specification.
This invention has for its object an'arrangement of vise which can be clamped on the bar of a gate or other likesupport', such as can be found along any highway. This isvery desirable in motoring, as there is no part of a motor, as a rule, to which a vise can be temporarily attached in this way, and ordinary vises cannot without very considerable .trouble and defacement of the article on which they are fixed be attached to a gate-bar or the like. It is, moreover, a most useful tool for electricians, plumbers, and others.
gripping portion of the jaw. This is screwthreaded. A long screwed pin D, having a part (1 close to the head D left unscrewed, is provided with a clamp member E, loose on the in D, but fitting with a good fit, and capab e of hanging on the pin D at right angles thereto, but prevented by the accurate fit from taking any but a position at right angles to it and parallel with the outside of the jaw B. 'This pin D, which is free 'to turn in the clamp member E, is screwed through the hole Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 21, 1905. Serial No. 251,274.
' Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
screwed pin 'D being screwed out of the jaw B until the clamp member E stands at some distance from it, the article is placed over, say, the rail G of a gate or other object with the clamp member E on one side of the rail and the jaw B on the other.
means of a spanner applied to its head or by means of a bar passed through a hole H therein until jaw B is tight up against the rail G on one side and the clamp member E on the other. It will then be quite firm and stand any amount of strain. The article to be held can now be placed between gripping edges of the j awsand the fly-nut F screwed up until the jaws hold the article tightly. The jaws are opened by a spring I, which separates the jawAfrom B when the fly-nutFis unscrewed. The pin D also acts as an abutment against G to prevent the 'vise slipping down.
I declare that what I claim is 1. A vise comprising two jaws (with gripping edges) hinged together at one end, a threaded pin screwed through a threaded hole in one aw and passingfreely through a plain hole in the other, a clamping member mounted at one end of this pin and disposed in a plane parallel to one jaw in such a manner, that by screwing up the pin the said member and jaw can be made to hold tightly on some fixed object, anda nut at the other end of the pin for closing up the other jaw to hold an article between the gripping edges.
2. A vise comprising two jaws or members A B with gripping edges, a pin threaded for its entire length (except at a art close to the head) screwed through a t readed hole in one jaw A below the gripping edges and assing through a plain hole in the other a clamping-plate mounted at one end of the pin next the head on the unthreaded part so as to lie parallel to its adjacent j aw B, and
It is now screwed up by turning the head D of the pin D by the opposing faces toothed or serrated, and
a nut at the other end of the pin, whereby by screwing up the pinby its head, the vise can be clamped to some fixed object with the clamp at one'side and the jaw B at the other, or by screwing up" the nut at the other end of that pin, the other jaw A iswithout unclamping the deviceclosed up to hold an article between its gripping edges.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a threaded member, a
primary jaw threaded upon said member, a aterally-adjustable, auxiliary jaw positioned upon said member and movably connected to said primary jaw, means for securing said auxiliary jaw in an adjusted position, and a clamp member carried by said threaded member.
4. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination of a primary jaw, a member threaded into said jaw, a clamp member carried by said threaded member, a freely-movable, auxiliary jaw carried by said primary jaw and positioned upon said threaded member, and means for independently adjusting said clamp'member and said freely-movable, auxiliary jaw.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a revoluble member, primary and auxiliary ivotally-mounted jaws carried by saidrevo luble member, a clamp member carried by said revoluble member, said clamp member adapted to be adjusted relative to said primary jaw by imparting movement to said revoluble member, and longitudinally movable means carried by said revoluble member and adapted to adjust said auxiliary aw relative to said primary aw.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a revoluble member, of a pair of jaws mounted upon said revoluble member, revoluble means carried by said revoluble member and adapted to adjust one of said jaws relative to the other jaw, and a clam member carried by said revoluble mem er, said clamp member adapted to be and said jaws, said revoluble means adapted to adjust said clamp member relative to said jaws, and longitudinally-adjustable means carried by said revoluble means and capable of adjusting one of said jaws relative to the other jaw.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a clamp member, a pair of jaws, rotary means supporting said clamp member and connecting sald jaws, said rotary means adapted to adjust said clamp member, and an independent rotatable member coacting with said rotary means for adjusting one of said jaws.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 3d day of March, 1905, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PERCY NUGENT AVERY.
