I Specification of Letters Patent. Applicatienfiled March 2,1905. Serial No. 248,055.
' mem Dec. 5, 1905.
Be aknown that I, 'F A OI'S vroach WoELFFLn, a citizen of the United States,
and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curling-Irons, of
which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a curling-iron for curling hair by which the hair may be given a waving appearance and in which the wave may be curved in regard to the lengthwise direction of the hair without injuring'the hair, as has been necessary in former curlers. Heretofore 1t has been necessary w1th' a curllng-lron havm the two members in order to twist the hair after the hair is between the two members, soas to give it a wave, to
wrap'the iron in the hair in order to apply the heat to the outeredge of the curler and then work the iron, and in doin so it causes material damagqel' to the hair. his is also a very difficult t 'ng to do. to secure certain curves inthe hair, as it requires considerable experience before success can be. had; and, it
" is the object of my inventionto suplplyfir lslup Wi eat plementary heating member whic r the hair at thetop of the'curve, wherejitis bent by the ordinary jaws. 3
The detailsof my invention will more ;.fully described hereinafter."
- In the dra gs forming part this ap 'plication, Fi 'ure 1 is aperspective view .of my'impro.ve iron with-t when closed and showing thehairgripped in ejawsopen. Fig.- 2 is a similar view of a portion'of the iron U the jaws. 1 Fig. 3 is acrosssection on the 'line 3 3 ofFig. 2.
In the ordinary curlingironthere is a jaw 1, which is curved and adapted to receive in the curved portion a secondary rod '2, each of these members being either made integral I with or secured to handles 3 and 4, .working of-giving the hair the curl on a pivot 5, so as to be opened and closed by the handles.- Both of themembers' 1 and 2- are heated in any desired wag for-the purpose ing the parts 1 and 2 to ether withthe hair between. The object o my invention is to i instance, as 6-in such a position .thatit will.
' heat the hair on the outside of the bend, andfor this purpose preferably attach it to the applyanother heating. members uch, for
.rience and 'materialinjury to the hair.
sired by bring-1 is desired to have thehair wave in more than one direction, the comb 9 may be placed in thehair, as shown in Fig. 3, and drawn either ,tothe right or left lengthwise of the hair,
leading the hair on the surface of the member 6, when the hair will be waved in that direction. The iron may then be removed lower down on the hair and this operation reversed by pushing thecomb in the oppo- I v site direction tocurve it reversely. lHaving. described my invention, what I claim is..
- 1. A curling-iron: comprising a heating memberwhich is circular in cross section,
and a second heating member which is con cavoconvex cross-section, toreceive the first member, the sald members cooperating to form a-rclamp for the hair, operatmg-handles for the said members, and athird heat- 'ing member operated by one of the said han-' dles and being parallel with the other heating memberswhen the iron is closed, theedge of Sol , said-concavoconvex member being adapted to enter betweenthe other two heating memif .bers, when the iron is. closed, whereby the V ,halr l's curved between the concavoconvex i me'mber and one of the round-members, and 1 is then} reversely curvedon the edge of'the concavoconvex memben- 2. curl ng-iron comprising an annularlycurved-heating member provided with a handle, and having -anfaperture therein, a bifur cated second heating member rovidedwith a handle, one of said bifurcate ends passingv through the opening in the first heating memberand pivotedtherein.
' S'gned this 1st day of March, 1905.
