Be it known that I, PET-ER ScHooNMAKEn, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford, and State of Gonnectcut, have invented a new and improved Bit for Bridles, Harnesses, 85e. and that the following description, taken in connection' with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referredto, forms a full and exact specification of the same, whereinI have set forth the nature and principles oi' my said improvement, by which iny invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as Iclaim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.

The'present invention particularly relates to the japanned bridle and harness-bits, so called and known in the trade, and itcon-sists in providing the rings to such hits with a. lining of German silver, 4or other metal having a bright surface, or susceptible of receiving and retaining a.l polish, whereby, while the beauty and iinish ofthe bit-rings are much enhanced, the durability and wear of the japan are greatly increased.

A, in the drawings, represents a bit, suitable for harnesses or bridles, end, C, ofthe sections D'of bit A, that are hung together at their-other en cyes'F, to the bit-sections D, and all are japanned in any suitable manner.

The rings B, upon their inneusides or surface, are provided with a. lining, L, of German silver, or other metal having a, bright surface, or susceptible of being polished. This lining extends around the inner side of the said rings, and by its two ends, G, which are secured by being sprung into'the slots a of' the ring, at or nea'r the eyes F, -to the bit, and upon each thereof, as is plainly shown in the drawings, and fig. 4 more particularly. i v

These rings Bi are hung in By providing a lining to the btrin`gs, as above described, it is plainly obvious that not only are the dura bility and wear of the japan on the bit greatly increased, und other important advantages secured, but the appearance and beauty ofthe bit greatly enhanced, and thusa very desirable article of trade obtained.

Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as my in`ventiou, is-

As a new article of manufacture, a japanned bridle or harnessbit, having its rings lined with metal, substnntially as described for the purpose specified. 1
