WIRE-FENCE FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. HARTMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conklin, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in wire-fence fasteners, and more particularly to fastenings for securing a wire-fence to cement posts. Its object is to provide means for readily attaching and detaching the fence and to provide the same with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My invention consists, substantially, of the hereinafter-described fastening, preferably made of wire and having coils arranged in pairs one above the other and adapted to embrace the longitudinal wires of a fence and a vertical rod detachably inserted in said coils to secure the fence-wires in place, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a fence-post with my device attached thereto; Fig. 2, an enlarged detail shown in elevation; Fig. 3, the same in plan view; Fig. 4, a front elevation of the fastener proper detached from the post, and Fig. 5 a modification for use with wooden posts.

Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.

1 represents a fence-post, preferably of concrete or cement; 2, the horizontal wires of the fence; 3, my improved fastener inserted in the post, and 4; the rod for securing the outer sides is slightly less than the diameter of the wire, whereby the coils will spring apart as the wire 2 is forced between the same, and will thus yieldingly hold the wire in place. The respective ends of the fastener are prolonged parallel to each other, at at 8, and are bent outward, as at 9, whereby the fastener is securely anchored in the post. If this fastener is to be used in a wooden post, the outwardly-bent ends 9 are omitted and the parts 8 are sharpened and driven into the post.

To securely retain the fencewires 2 in place, a rod 4 is inserted vertically through the coils 5 and 6 and outside the fence-wires. This rod is bent at its upper end, whereby it is supported in place by the upper fastener. By withdrawing this rod the fence can be detached or replaced, as occasion requires.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a fence, a fastener comprising two horizontally-disposed coils spaced apart, adiagonally-disposed middle portion connecting the coils, and parallel end portions adapted to be inserted in a fence-post.

2. In a fence, a fastener comprising two substantially parallel coils spaced apart, a diagonally-disposed middle portion connecting the coils, parallel portions adapted to be inserted in a post, and oppositely-projecting end portions.

3. As an article of manufacture, a fastener for wire fence consisting of a single piece of wire having a diagonally-disposed middle por- -tion, two substantially parallel coils spaced apart, parallel portions projecting from the coils, and oppositely-projecting end portions.

4:. As an article of manufacture, a fastener for wire fence consisting of a single piece of wire having a diagonally-disposed middle portion, two coils spaced apart and converging at their forward sides, and rearwardly-projecting parallel end portions adapted to be inserted in a fence-post.

5. In afence, in combination with a post and horizontal wires, a wire having its end inserted in the post, and having two'coils spaced apart and embracing the horizontal wire, and a diagonally-disposed middle portion connecting the coils, and a rod inserted in the coils.

6. In a fence, a cement post, a series of fasteners each consisting of a single wire having coils and oppositely engaged by the said nnid dle portion and the rod.
