`TTED sTATEs PATENT ormoni.
TELEPHONE-DIRECTORY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905` Application tied November 8,1904. serial No. 231,857.
To L7/Z whom, it 717mg/ concern:
The object oi this invention is to provide a case adapted to be conveniently attached to the transmitter-arm of a telephone for the purpose of providing a receptacle for a plurality of index or directory cards which would be alphabetically marked and arranged and upon which Ycan be written or otherwise marked with the names and telephone-numbers of subscribers with whom one has frequent or even occasional intercourse, thus obviating the necessity of repeatedly looking through the customary directory-lists, which is a very tedious and aggravating undertaking.
The invention consists or' the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure l is a front elevation of the invention shown attached to a telephone-transmitter. Fig. 2 is vertical cross-section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a detached directory-card.
In the drawings, the letter A represents a card-case comprised of side walls a, having inclined top edges, front and back walls fr and e, which coincide with the height of the said sides thereat, and a bottom wall Provided in the respective back and front walls and in horizontal and axial alinement with each other are circular' apertures and t of diameters corresponding, respectively, with the diameters of the telephone-mouthpiece T adjacent of the screwed socket end thereof and at a distance outwardly therefrom equal to the horizontal thickness of the case, and when this mouthpiece is screwed into the socket of the diaphragm-chamber z5 and by reason of its tapering form it will press the case firmly against said chamber. Projecting upwardly through an aperture d in the middle of the case-bottom is a thumb-screw e, which passes through a screw-threaded registering aperture f of a non-rotatable plate g, so that as the screw is turned in one direction to impinge at its point against the under side of said mouthpiece it will exert a downward pressure upon the case and hold the same rigidly in an upright position.
Alphabetically-indexed cards C are provided for the case and are severally formed with an incision c in their lower edges sutiiciently large to permit the lower legs c' thereof loosely straddling the mouthpiece between the case-walls. These cards are preferably formed ot' two or more different heights in order that the denominating or inital letters of each may be seen at a glance without the need of fingering or bending forward the cards in selecting the proper one. In manufacturing these cards, however, they are each desirably given a transverse crease to weaken them thereat and which creases arranged so that the crease of any particular card will be somewhat higher than that of the card immediately in front of the same, as indicated by the line m a' in Fig. 2. The object of thus weakening the cards in an inclined plane is to enable those in front oi' a selected one being bent forward suiiiciently to display the names and telephone-numbers marked upon the latter without first removing it or the cards in iront from the case.
It is obvious from the foregoingl that the invention is one of great utility. Itis ot' simple and inexpensive construction and can be readily applied to any telephone where it is always in position for use.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a directory-case for a telephone, comprising a boxlike receptacle `for holding a plurality of indexcards, said case being provided in its front and back walls with apertures adapted to receive the mouthpiece of a telephone, and a screw device Tor retaining said case in an upright position, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a cardcase consisting of side walls, a bottom wall, a front wall and a rear wall of greater height than said front wall, said two last-named walls being provided with telephone-mouthpiecereceiving apertures in axial alinement with each other,a thumb-screw extending' upwardly IOO through said bottom wall and passing through a screw-threaded aperture of a non-rotatable plate positioned within the case, and the said plate, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the class described, in combination with a case adapted to be held on and to the mouthpiece of a telephone, a plurality of indexed cards adapted to be held in said case, each card being creased along an approximately7 central line.
4. Adevice of the class described, in combination with a case adapted to be attached to the mouthpiece of a telephone, a plurality of indexed cards, adapted to be held in said case, each card being creased transversely between its upper and lower edges.
5. In a device of the class described in combination with a case adapted to be attached to the mouthpiece of a telephone, a plurality of indexed cards adapted to be held in said case and provided with transverse creases severally arranged at different heights.
6. In a device of the class described, in combination with a case adapted to be held on and to the mouthpiece of a telephone and means for securing the same to said mouthpiece, a plurality of indexed cards adapted to be held in said case and provided with transverse creases severally arranged at successively-increasing heights.
7. In a device of the class described, a case adapted to be held onand to the mouthpiece of a telephone, and a .plurality of indexed cards adapted to be held in said case and provided with bifurcated ends, loosely straddling said mouthpiece, in combination with means for securing the case to said mouthpiece.
8. In a device of the class described, a cardcase consisting of side walls, a bottom wall, a front wall and a rear wall of greater height than said front wall, said two last-named walls being provided with telephone-mouthpiecereceiving apertures in axial alinement with each other, said case being` capable of holding a plurality of indexed cards, formed with bifurcated ends, loosely straddling said mouthpiece and provided with transverse creases, severally arranged at successively-increasing heights, in combination with means for securing the case to said mouthpiece, said means embodying a thumb-screw extending upwardly through said bottom Wall and passing through a screw-threaded aperture, of a non-rotatable plate positioned within the case and the said plate, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the type set forth in combination with a case adapted to be attached to the mouthpiece of a telephone and provided with an open end, a plurality of indexed cards adapted to be held in said case, each card being creased along a line parallel withthe edges of Cthe walls of said case adjacent to said open en 10. In a device of the type described,in combination with a case adapted to be attached to the mouthpiece of a telephone, and provided With an open end, a plurality of indexed cards adapted to be held in said case and provided with transverse creases, severally arranged at successively-increasing distances, along lines parallel with the edges of the walls of said case adjacent to said open end.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
