IMPROVEMENT IN SHAFTING.
@the .rlgttnls refemt tt-nltigrse @trims atmt mit making part 'tf the same. t
i TO ALL, WHOM Il4 MAY `ONCJERN:
Beit known that l, LEMAN B. PITCHER, of the town of Salina, in the county of .Onondaga, and 'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shafting; and I do hereby declare that the following is afullfclear, and exact description of thevsame, reference being had to the annexed drawing, which4 Vforms a part of this specification, `and represents in perspective the improvements whichl claim.
Said improvements consist of a non-revolving' bent shaft, either ,solid or hollow, and are intended to apply lmore particularly to theshafting for hollow revolving cylinders, used for manufacturing-purposes, with an open feedinghole in -threlhead, and are intended to afford a strong support for the cylinder tml-evolve on, and so bent'that the hole in said head shall be kept nearly free and open while feeding saidcylinder.
'F represents a. frame, upon which a cylinder, C, is mounted, on themen-revolving shaft S, with bearings b b, in the ordinary'form. I `continue the non-revolving shaft S in the form of a strong bent arm, A, until it passes through the supporting-beam' B, where that end is held by a. nut, or any other ordinary device. It should be bent, in such form land curve that it will just'clear the rim ofthe open feeding-head, and afford the vleast possible obstruction to the s'am'e. Although not indispensable, I prefer to make the nonrevolving shaftS and the strong arm A. hollow, either furthe purposes of lubrication or' to introduce any fluid Athat may be desired in the' cylinder C, for assisting or facilitating any manufacturing operation that may be carriedon therein.
Thesize of the hole in the non-revolving shaft, and how far it shall extend into the arm A and the non- Vrevolving shaft S, will vary vaccording to the use that may be intended.
The dots o o are openings for lubricating the bearings 6 b, by passing the lubricatinglmaterial through the /tuberunning through the non-revolving shaft, asV aforesaid, when that Ais desired.
Ono ormore'faucets, l,- maybe used when it isdesired to introduce the iiud into the cylinder C, as aforesaid; l i
To regulate the flow of such iiuid, I use the regulator placed at a convenient point ou the `arm A, in the form `of a cock, for that purpose.
yM is a funneL-in any common form, for receiving the uid.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The nou-revolving bent shaft A and S, when made and applied for the purpose aforesaid, substantially in tbe manner above described. 4
' LEMAN B. PITCHER.
