To il who/1t it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY M. CHASE and lVrLLs M. FLEMING, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to pumps, and more particularly to that class thereof in which the inlet-valve is movable with and carried on the pump-piston; and it has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character in which the inlet-valve is operable in a positive manner, but is controlled in both its opening and closing movements by the movement of the pump-piston.
Our invention has, furthermore, for its object the improved construction of the valveoperating mechanism, which is so organized as to become effective in opening and closing said valve during the initial movements of both its supply and discharge strokes, respectively.
Further objects of the invention may be found in the particular construction and organization of the piston-valve, as will be hereinafter described, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing's, in which similar characters denote similar parts, and in which- Figure 1 represents a central section of a pu nip-cylinder, its piston, and the mechanism for positively controlling the valve movement, the piston being shown as having completed its discharge-stroke. Fig. 2 is a face view of the valve-reversing mechanism, corresponding to Fig'. 1. Fig'. 3 is a section of the latter on line 3, Fig. 2. Fig'. i is a section on line 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the piston; and Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the piston having commenced its receiving stroke.
Referring to the drawings, 10 denotes the pump-cylinder, having an inlet-opening 11 and a discharge-opening 12. Mounted for reciprocation in the cylinder 1() is a piston 13, connected through a rod 14 with a crosshead '15, which is guided in ways 16 and may be actuated by a connecting-rod 17 from any concurrent source.
The piston 13 is preferably made in skeleton form to establish a series of opening's 18, through which the iiuid to be pumped may pass, as usual, during the descent of said piston and which may be closed during the up o1' discharge stroke by a valve V, consisting' (in the preferred form thereof shown) of an annular disk made of rubber and having a metallic core 19, provided with a central hub 20. Secured to the hub Q0 isa sleeve 21, surrounding the piston-rod 14E and movable longitudinally thereon and having at its upper extremity a trunnion-collar 22, which is in engagement with the slotted ends of arms 23, mounted upon a shaft 24:, to which an intermittent oscillatory movement may be imparted by a lever 30, having the shaft 2f- L as its fulerum-axis. The shaft 21 is journaled in a bearing Q6, which may be secured or made integral with the cross-head 15, so that as the piston-rod la is reciprocated the shaft 24 will move in unison therewith vertically.
Means are provided for actuating the arms 23 through the oscillation of the shaft 2l, these means comprising in the present instance a lever BO, secured to the shaft Q-.L and carrying' at its upper free end a roller 231 in engagement with a cam device, whereby this roller may be thrown in opposite directions during successive strokes of the piston 13, thus moving the valve-disk V relatively to the main piston 13. The cam device is designated ina general way by the character C and is preferably stationary on one of the cross-head guides 16. By referring' to Fig'. 2 it will be seen that this device consists substantially of a box-like casing comprising a pair of side walls 35 36 and a central partition 37, dividing the device in such a manner as to form two grooves 3S 39, disposed side by side and each containing' a roller-switching device made in the form of a by-pass, whereby the roller 31 will be automatically shifted from one groove into the other during its initial movement vertically in either direction. Disposed within the groove 38 is a by-pass cam 10, pivoted at 41 on the casing C and having a'beveled face 42, adapted to be engaged by the roller 31 during the latter part of its vertical movement with the piston-rod 14, and inasmuch as in the present instance the roller 31 and its lever 30 cannot yield outwardly the by-pass 40 will be swung rearward until the roller 31 has arrived at a sufficiently-elevated position to permit the bypass again to swing forward to its normal position and as actuated by a weighted arm 4Q. The arm L1() is provided with a cam-face TOO 43, which when the arm is in normal position is in the direct path of the verticallymovable roller 31 and serves to guide or switch the same from the groove 38 into the groove 39, thereby rocking the shaft 24, and consequently opening the valve V in the piston 13 in a positive and predetermined manner during the initial downward movement of the latter, as shown in Fig. 6. Asomewhat similar roller-switch is provided in the lower end of the groove 39, the bottom of which is cut away to allow free playto a by-pass 45, pivoted at 46 and having a beveled face 47, adapted to be engaged by the roller 3l near the latter end of its movement in said groove. As soon as the roller has descended sufficiently to permit the by-pass to resume its normal position and as actuated by aweighted arm 48 the cam-face 49 of the by-pass 45 will be projected into the groove 39, and consequently into position to positively shift the roller 31 during its ascending movement with the piston 13 into the groove 38 to close the valve V.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a piston-valve-operating device, the combination with a cylinder and a piston therein having an aperture, a valve for normally closing said aperture, a movable element located outside the cylinder, a connection between said valve and said element, and means located outside the cylinder and cooperating with the element for moving the valve relatively to the piston during the initial movement thereof, in both directions.
2. In a piston-valve-operating device, the combination with a cylinder and a piston therein having an aperture, of a valve for normally closing said aperture, a rock-shaft located outside the cylinder, a connection between the valve and rock-shaft, and means cooperating with the rock-shaft for moving the valve relatively to the piston during the initial movement thereof in both directions, said means also located outside the cylinder.
3. In a piston-valve-operative device, the combination with a cylinder and a piston therein having an aperture, of a valve for normally closing said aperture, comprising' a resilient body portion having a metallic core and a central hub, a sleeve attached at one end to said hub and surrounding the piston-rod, said sleeve extending outside the cylinder, and positive means connecting a part of the sleeve outside the cylinder for moving the valve relatively to the piston during the initial movement thereof, in both' directions.
4. The combination with a reciprocatory piston having an aperture, a piston-rod and a valve for normally closing said aperture, of a sleeve surrounding said rod connected to the valve, a rock-shaft having a connection with the sleeve, and a cam device for actuating said rock-shaft during successive strokes of the piston. v y
5. The combination with a reciprocatory piston having an aperture, a piston-rod and a valve for normally closing said aperture, of a rock-shaft journaled in a bearing movable with the piston, a sleeve surrounding said rod and having a connection with the valve, a connection between said sleeve and rock-shaft, and a stationary device for actuating said rockshaft during the movements of the piston, for the purpose specified.
6. The combination with a reciprocatory piston having an aperture, a piston-rod and a valve for normally closing said aperture, of a rock-shaft,I a lever connection between the valve and rock-shaft for moving said valve relatively to the piston during the initial movement thereof, in both directions, a cam device comprising a pair of grooves and a pair of switching devices for throwing the end of the lever from one groove into the other, alternately.
7 The combination with a reciprocatory piston having an aperture, and a valve for normally closing said aperture, of a rock-shaft, a lever connecting the valve and rock-shaft for moving said valve relatively to the piston during the initial movement thereof, in both directions, a cam device comprising a pair of grooves, and a pair of by-pass cams for throwing the end of the lever from one groove into the other, alternately, during successive strokes of the piston.
8. The combination with a reciprocatory piston having an aperture, and a piston-rod, of a sleeve surrounding said rod, a valve for normally closing said aperture, carried by said sleeve, a rock-shaft, a lever connection between the sleeve and rock-shaft for moving said sleeve longitudinally of the piston rod and means for actuating said rock-shaft.
9. The combination with a reciprocatory piston having an aperture, and a piston-rod, of a sleeve surrounding said rod, a valve for normally closing said aperture, carried by said sleeve, a rock-shaft, arms carried on said rockshat and having a connection with the sleeve for moving the latter longitudinally of the piston-rod and means for operating said arm, for the purpose specied.
