To (1,17 whom it may concern- Be it known that I, CHARLiIs N. TALBOT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will en able any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to a packing case or box which when packed may be closed or nailed up with very little labor or manipulation and which when the box is to be opened may be so opened without the necessity of removing the ordinary nails or screws or other fastening devices used for such purpose.

I have illustrated a type of my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figures 1 and 2 show in perspective the supplemental and the main body part, respectively, of my improved packing case or box, the two side parts being separated and spaced from each other to show more clearly theconstruction thereof and the supplemental part, moreover, having the so-called top of the box omitted for the sake of clearness. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the body part and the supplemental part without the top when the two are assembled or put together in condition for transportation. Fig. Iis aside view of the complete box closed and nailed up ready for transportation. Fig. 5 is a side view of the main body part and the supplemental part of the box shown as separated after the holding-strips have been sawed on the line of the joint between the two parts to permit of the box being opened.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like numbers of reference indicate like parts throughout, 1 is the main body part of the box, and 2 is the supplemental part. The main body part of the box comprises a bottom 3 with four sides 5, 6, 7, and 8, respectively. Two of the opposite sides 7 and 8, for exampleof the body part of the box are made of less depth than the other two sides 5 and 6. The supplemental part2 of the box is practically a rectangular frame having four comparatively shallow sides 9, 10, 11, and 12, respectively, the opposite sides 11 and 12 being of greater depth than the other two sides 9 and 10, for the purpose of fitting completely upon the upper part of the body portion 1 of the box. The deep sides 11 and 12 of the frame part are each rabbeted or grooved at 13 to lit a corresponding rabbet or groove 14: on the upper edge of the two shallow sides 7 and 8, respectively, of the body part 1. The purpose of this overlapping joint 13 and 14: is to prevent one part of the box from slipping on the other, since in the construction shown there is nothing to withstand the endwise thrust of the supplemental part except the small portion of the holding-strips 15 which secure the two parts together, and this, perhaps, may be insuflicient for that purpose. Instead of the groove 13 14 an ordinary beveled joint may be used, the object sought being that of preventing the slipping of one part on the other.

The so-called top 16 of the box is secured to the upper edge of the supplemental part 2 and is nailed or otherwise secured, as in the ordinary construction of wooden packingboxes. l/Vhen the box is to be put together for use, the supplemental part 2 is placed on the upper part of the main or body portion 1 as shown in Fig. 3, and the holding-strips 15 are attached on opposite sides of the completed box at the four corners thereof. These holding-strips 15 are secured by means of suitable fasteners 17 and may be either nailed or screwed to the deep sides 5 and 6 of the body part projecting a distance above said deep sides equal to the depth of the shallow sides 9 and 10, to which they are also attached, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Then the box is ready for packing, and after it has been filled the lid is nailed down in the ordinary manner, as shown in Fig. 4. In the'described relation of the parts it will be seen that the several holding-strips 15 cross the joint 19 between the body part and the supplemental part of the box and that the two parts are thus held together during transportation. 'When, therefore, these holding-strips 15 are cut 01' sawed at the point indicated at 20 and in the plane of the joint 19 the two parts of the box are severed from each other so that they may be taken apart without the necessity of removing any of the fastening devices, such as nails or screws. The strips 15 may also be pried off with much less effort than the top of an ordinary box is removed.

It-will be observed that after this type of box has once been used and the holding-strips 15 have been mutilated by cutting on the line of the joint of the two parts in the event of it being desirable to use the box again it may be readily put together by merely employing an extra set of holding-strips, which either may be nailed over the old ones or secured to the sides other than the sides where the original strips are located.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is

1. A packing case or box comprisinga main body part including the bottom of the box and main part of its four respective sides, a

supplemental part consisting in a shallow rectangular frame open at its top and bottom and the respective sides of which constitute supplemental portions of the four sides of the box, and a top adapted to be secured to said shallow frame constituting the top of the box, the said shallow frame being fitted to the said main body part, and a set of holding-strips secured to both the main body part and to said shallow frame crossing the joint between the two parts, whereby upon sawing or cutting the said holding-strips on the line of the oint the said frame carrying the top may be separated from the body part, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A packing case or box comprising a main body part including the bottom of the box and main part of its four respective sides and with two opposite sides of less depth than the other two sides, a supplemental part consist ing in a comparatively shallow rectangular frame open at its top and bottom and having two opposite sides thereof of greater depth than the other two opposite sides to correspond to the diflerence in depth of the said sides of the main body part, atop adapted to be secured to said supplemental part and constituting the top of the box and aset of bolding-strips secured to both the main body part and the said shallow frame crossing the joints between the two parts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
