.4 TTOBNEYS UNITED STATES PETER HILBERT, OF WHITEPLAINS, NEW YORK.
MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1905.
Application filed March 6, 1905. Serial No. 248,403.
To all whom it nen/,y concern:
Be it known that I, PETER HILBERT, a subject of the Kingof Denmark.residingatVVhiteplains, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following' is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to match boxes or holders, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which will hold a large number of matches and from which only one match can be removed at a time, a further object being to provide animproved device of the class specified which is also provided with a receptacle for burned matches.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section on the line :c rc of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section on the line y y of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a base a, which is preferably rectangular in form and in which is a receptacle a2, which may be used as a receiver for burned matches or other articles, and said receptacle is provided near its opposite sides with standards Z1, each of which is provided with a vertical slot b2. (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and full lines in Fig. 1.)
Secured centrally in the receptacle c2 and transversely thereof and between the standards b is an upright member o, composed in the form of construction shown of sides c2, a bottom plate c, and a top plate 0*, which is rectangular in form, and mounted on the upright member c is a vertically movable box 6l, which is free to move on the upright member c, and passing through the slots b2 and the standards are screws, pins, or similar devices e, which hold -the box Z on the upright member c and limit the upward movement of said box. The upright member c or the top portion thereof is so formed as to closely fit the box (l and to provide a plunger movable freely in said box, and said upright mem ber c may consist of a solid block, if desired, instead of being' composed of separate parts, as herein shown and described.
The box Z is provided at its upper end with a top composed of opposite sides d2, which are inclined inwardly to form a cone-shapedl apex (Z3, in which is a horizontal slot or opening CV, and the sides Z2 at the top of the box Z are provided centrallythereof and in the g top thereof with thumb and linger openings d5.
The opposite sides of the box d are also prof vided with upwardly directed members c, which may be formed integrally with the sides of said box or separately and besecured thereto, as shown in Eig. 1, and pivoted to said members e by horizontally-arranged rods or similar devices @2 are blocks f, which in the form of construction shown are triangular in cross-section and the bottom surface of which are segmental or convex in crosssection and provided each with a longitudinal groove f2, and said blocks are free to swing on the pivot-pins c2; but in the normal position of said blocks the grooves f2 in the bottom thereof are directly over the slots CZ* in the top side portions of the top of the box CZ, and said blocks are provided in their outer ends each with a segmental groove f3, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and full lines in Fig. 1,) and the upright side members e are provided with pins c3, movable in said grooves, and whereby the lateral swing of the blocks f is limited, said blocks being adapted to swing through an arc'slightly greater than the transverse diameter of the grooves f2 in the bottom thereof.
It will be observed that by taking out the screws or other devices e the box Z may be removed from the upright mem-ber c, and in practice the said box is removed from said member and partially filled with matches, as shown at g, and while holding the box CZ in an inverted position thebase a is manipulated so as to insert the upright member c thereinto, after which the device, with the separate parts assembled, is turned into an upright position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the screws or other devices e are secured in place.
Vhen the matches have been placed in the box CZ and the separate parts of the device connected in the manner described, the matches g are forced upwardly into the top of the box CZ, as shown in the drawings, thesaid box being supported by the matches on the upright member c, and the top portion of the box is entirely filled with matches, and in order to remove a single match from the holder or from the box Z the said match is grasped by the thumb and finger of one hand through the openings Z5 in the opposite sides of the top of the box IOO IIO
eoroie and is removed through the slots d". In this ed at its upper end with a top the sides of operation Vthe match enters the grooves f 2 in the bottom o the blocks f and is niovedor drawn out laterally, the bloclsf swinging to one side, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so as to permit thev removal ot' the match. and it will be apparent that vonly one match can thus be removed at a time.
rl'his device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and changes in and modifications ot' the construction described may be made without departing lrom the spirit of my invention or sacrilicing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A match-holder, comprising a base portion provided with standards having vertical slots, l said base portion being also provided with a central upright member piaeed between said standards, a vertically7 movable and removable box mounted on said central upright member and the lower end of which is open and in which the top of said upright member operates as a plunger, said box being providwhich are inclined inwardly and upwardly and. provided at their apex with a longitudinal groove through which asingle match may be removed, the side portions olf the top being' also provided with thumb-and-linger openings arranged transversely of said groove, said box being also provided at the opposite sides of the top thereotl with upWardly-directed mem bers, blocks pivoted to the inner sides of said members and adapted to swing laterally and provided in the bottom thereotl with grooves which correspond with the longitudinal slot in the apex oli' the top of the box, means for linjiiting the lateral movement of said blocks, and removable stops passed through the slots in said standards and seemed to the sides of the vertically-movable box, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention l have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 3d day of March, 1905.
