IMPROVEMENT IN GULTIVATOR.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Be it known that I, J. IL SKELLY, trauma, in the county of Kankakee,-inthe State of Illinois, have invented a useful Improvement in Cultivators; and I do hereby. declare that the following is 'a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention, with one of the wheels removed to give a clear view of its construction.

This invention relates to a cultivator supported on an axle and wheels, and designed for the operator either to ride or walk behind the plows, as the case may require, and give the shovels such a lateral motion, as is necessary to cultivate rows of corn and other crops; and its nature consists in attaching the forward ends of the shovel-beams to arms at the top of the main frame, by means of pivot-rods and braces, and supporting the ends of the arms onfriction-rollerspin order that they may readily turn back and forth on their respective tracks, when the shovels are to have a reciprocating motion.

'The object of this arrangement is to prevent the shovels from rising out of the ground, as when the upper ends of the chains are attached to fixed points and the shovels moved sidewise.

In order to give a clear understandingof my invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters,: and will now give a detailed description.

' B B represent aquadrangular frame, made of wood, and supported on an axle, IA, and wheels, Z, which are arranged in the usual manner, and therefore need no particular description. 7

C represents-one of the shovel-beams, to which the shanks a a, supporting shovels d d, are attached in the usual manner, as is also a handle, U, used to operate said shovels when the seat Rabove isremoved.

. F E represent a brace and pivot-rod rigidlyattached at their lower ends to form a coupling for the end P of the beam C, and a'pivot for it to swing on. The upper end of the pivot E is made to pass through the frame B, and the forward end of a wooden arm, -D, to which the upper end of the brace F is rigidly attached, thus providing means for turning said arm the same distance as the beam C is turned, when giving the shovels d d a lateral motion. v v

The end of the arm D is made to support a friction-roller, M, arranged to run on a curved metal track, N, attached to that part of the frame shown at B. It also supports an elbow-lever, H I, which is pivoted to the arm at v, and has a hook for fastening the upper end of the chain c, and a projecting nib, S, figs. 1 and 2, for locking against. the top of the arm D, and supporting the weight of the shovels, when raised out of the ground, and regulating their depth in it. I s V The drawing at fig. 1 represents the shovels in position for use, and the dotted lines T show the position of the beam C andlever HrL when they are raised up, as when moving to and from a field, turning round, &c.

R representsa plank seat rigidly attached to extension-springs or arms, K, which are held to the frame B by means oflqops, L, of such size as will permit the arms to be adjusted so as to place the seat R to or from the lever H, as the operator may require for convenience, and to be removed so as to take the seat out of the way, when the operator is to guide the cultivator by the handles U. Stirrups,f, made in the usual manner, and attached to the beams, are used by the feet to give a lateral motion tothe shovels d, similarly as in other caltivators.

Only one beam and its attachments have been particularly described, but as the other beam is attached to the frame in the same manner, nodlfiiculty will be experienced in making the device.

Having fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United .States, ise l e 1. The beam 0, in combination with the pivot-rod E, brace F, and arm D, the latter being arranged to swing with the beam 0, and to travel on the track N by means of the roller M, substantially as shown and set forth. l

- 2. The combination of the beam C, chain-c, arm D, and the elbow-lever H I, the latter being pivoted to the arm, and having is projecting nib for locking against its top, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
