IMPROVEMENT IN GULTIVATOR.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Be it known that I, J. IL SKELLY, trauma, in the county of Kankakee,-inthe State of Illinois, have invented a useful Improvement in Cultivators; and I do hereby. declare that the following is 'a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention, with one of the wheels removed to give a clear view of its construction.

This invention relates to a cultivator supported on an axle and wheels, and designed for the operator either to ride or walk behind the plows, as the case may require, and give the shovels such a lateral motion, as is necessary to cultivate rows of corn and other crops; and its nature consists in attaching the forward ends of the shovel-beams to arms at the top of the main frame, by means of pivot-rods and braces, and supporting the ends of the arms onfriction-rollerspin order that they may readily turn back and forth on their respective tracks, when the shovels are to have a reciprocating motion.
'The object of this arrangement is to prevent the shovels from rising out of the ground, as when the upper ends of the chains are attached to fixed points and the shovels moved sidewise.
In order to give a clear understandingof my invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters,: and will now give a detailed description.

The end of the arm D is made to support a friction-roller, M, arranged to run on a curved metal track, N, attached to that part of the frame shown at B. It also supports an elbow-lever, H I, which is pivoted to the arm at v, and has a hook for fastening the upper end of the chain c, and a projecting nib, S, figs. 1 and 2, for locking against. the top of the arm D, and supporting the weight of the shovels, when raised out of the ground, and regulating their depth in it. Stirrups,f, made in the usual manner, and attached to the beams, are used by the feet to give a lateral motion tothe shovels d, similarly as in other caltivators.
Only one beam and its attachments have been particularly described, but as the other beam is attached to the frame in the same manner, nodlfiiculty will be experienced in making the device.
Having fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United .States, ise l e 1. The beam 0, in combination with the pivot-rod E, brace F, and arm D, the latter being arranged to swing with the beam 0, and to travel on the track N by means of the roller M, substantially as shown and set forth. l
- 2. The combination of the beam C, chain-c, arm D, and the elbow-lever H I, the latter being pivoted to the arm, and having is projecting nib for locking against its top, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
