To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD J. 'BRooKs, a citizen of the United States of America, and a residentof East Orange, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a 'new and useful Improvement in Seals and the Art of Making theSame, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to press-fastened metallic seals; and it consists in a novel method of preliminarily attaching and completing a soft-.- metal seal part of a peculiar type and in the improved seal so made.

The present invention is additional to the improvements in seals set forth and claimed in my specifications forming part of United States Letters Patent No. 512,274, dated- January 9, 1894; No. 521,137, dated June 5, 1894, and No. 611,889, dated October 4, 1898, relating in common therewith to that type of press-fastened seals in which both ends of a flexible shackle of suitable wire are provided with permanent loops and in which the compressible seal part of cast-lead is preliminarily attached to one end of the shackle by upsetting an annular shoulder upon its loop and is constructed with a central stud-pin to interact with'the other loop of the shackle preparatory to the final fastening or sealing operation.

The distinguishing objects of the present invention are to provide the seal part by a second upsetting operation with a domeshaped covered front, and thus to adapt the front of such seal parts more perfectly to receive any desired distinguishing-marks, such as suitable lettering on both faces in the sealpress, without complicating the dies of the latter and without interfering with or complicating the preliminary attachment of the seal part to the shackle by an upsetting operation under said Letters Patent No. 512,274.

at the respective stages of manufacture on thelines A, B, and C, respectively. Fig. 11 is a face view of the improved seal as applied to a pair of car-door staples. Fig. 12 is alike view of the pressed seal. Fig. 13 is a view of'the other face of the pressed seal-disk, and Fig. 14 is a face view of the improved seal as made with-the shackle of fiat wire.

The improved'seal is composed of afleXible shackle-wire a or av of any suitable metal and a compressible seal part b of suitable soft metal, herein termed. lead. The shacklewire a or a is made with permanent loops 1 and 2 or 1 and 2at its respective ends and leaves the factory otherwise straight, as represented in Figs. 1, 4, 6, and 14. The seal part I) is cast detached in the form of a recessed conical frustum, as represented by Figs. 2, 3, and 8, and has in this form a central stud-pin 3, an externally-beveled outer pin and concentric therewith, a deep annular recess 5, separating said pin and outer wall, an annular shoulder 6' on the inside of said outer wall, an embrasure 7 in said outer wall wall 4, extended in depth, surrounding said i in communication with said recess, and a mouth 8 in the form of an enlargement of said embrasure. It is also preferably and conveniently provided in the mold with radially-projecting horns 9, as set forth in said inserted therein, with its loop 1 or. 1 embrac ing the pin 3, and the shoulder 6 is then upset upon said loop by a suitable die in the manner set forth and claimed in said Patent No. 512,274, so as to preliminarily unite the shackle-wire a or a and seal part Z2, as illustrated byFigs. 4, 5, and9. Another suitable die is then applied, so as to turn inward thefront edges of the outer wall 4 by an upset ting or bending operation, closing or substantially closing the front of the seal part I; in

the form of a dome, but leaving the mouth 8 unobstructed, as illustrated by Figs. 6,7, and 10. In this form the improved seal leaves the factory completed as an article of manufacture.

The seal is applied to a pair of car-door staples c and d or the like in customary manner, and the free end of the shackle-wire a or dis then inserted endwise through the mouth 8 and its loop 2 or 2' is then engaged with the pin 3 in the usualway preparatory to the final fastening or sealing operation. Theimproved seal so made ready for the seal-press is represented by Fig. 11. A seal-press, which may be of a known or improved kind, is then applied to the seal part b, solidifying it around both loops of the shackle-wire a or a and impressing its respective faces with any desired distinguishing marks or lettering, as illustrated by X Y X in Fig. 12 and New York in Fig. 13.

In the species represented by Figs. 1 to 13, inclusive, the shackle-wire a is of ordinary round wire bent to form its loops 1 and 2.

In the species or modification represented by Fig. 14 the shackle a is of flat wire and its loops 1 and 2' are formed without joint by slitting and expanding the metal in a manner set forth and claimed in said Patent No. 611,889.

The centering-horns 9 may obviously be increased in number, if desired, as set forth in said Patent No. 521,137, or omitted altogether Without affecting the distinguishing features of the present invention, and other like-modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.

Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification 1. The within-described method of making a seal of lead and wire consisting in casting the seal part of lead in the form of a recessed conical frustum with a central pin, an externally-beveled outer wall extended in depth surrounding said pin and concentric therewith, a deep annular recess separating said pin and Wall, an annular shoulder on the inner side of said wall, an embrasure in said wall communicating with said recess and a mouth in the form of an enlargement of said embrasure; upsetting said shoulder upon a looped end of the shackle-wire, and thereby preliminarily uniting the parts; and then upsetting the front edge of the outer wall of the seal part to render the front of the seal part domeshaped and substantially closed by inturned metal, without obstructing said mouth.

2. A seal of lead and wire composed of a shackle-wire having a loop at each end and a seal part of cast-lead having a central loopengaging pin, an externally-beveled outer Wall, an annular recess separating said pin and said wall, an embrasure in said wall com municating with said recess, a mouth in the form of an enlargement of said embrasure and a dome-shaped front portion formed by inturned metal, one loop of the shackle-wire being engaged with said pin and held in place within said recess by metal of the seal part upset thereupon, and the other loop adapted to be inserted through said mouth and then engaged with said pin preliminary to the final fastening or sealing operation, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
