y Wl/VESSES.' I 4 NI/ENTOR JOHN J. DELEHAN'I, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DIE-STOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed October 12, 1904. Serial No. 228,233.
To all whom, llt may concern,.- i
Be it known that LJOHN J .DELEHANT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new andImproved Die-Stock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in stocks for thread-cutting dies, an object being to provide a die-stock with a simple means for quickly adjusting it to different sizes of pipes or rods on which a thread is to be cut and serving as a guide to cause a perfectly straight cut of the thread.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
I will describe a die-stock embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of a die-stock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line m of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line y y of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the head of the stock, to which the usual handles 6 are connected. The head is provided with a chamber 7 for receiving a thread-cuttingdie, which is held in place by means of a segmental plate 8, arranged to turn in a recess formed in a projection 9 on the head. This fasteningplate is movable over the laterally-outward opening of the chamber 7 to engage against the die. By having the chamber 7 open laterally or at one side it is obvious that a die may be quickly and easily inserted or removed.
Extended from the head 5 is a guide-tube 10, which is exteriorly threaded, and this tube is provided with longitudinal slots 11, in which guide-blocks 12 are movable. At the end adjacent to the head 5 the shanks of the guideblocks are provided with outwardly-projecting bosses 13, which are pivoted in lugs 14, formed on the end of the tube 10. Springs 15 engage with the portions 13 of the guideblocks and serve to move said blocks outward. Each guide-block has an inward extension 16 for engaging directly with the tube or rod, `and it also has an outwardly-extended portion 17, which is beveled at its side nearest the head 5 to form a cam-surface designed to be engaged by a collar 18, having an interior thread for engaging with the thread formed on the tube 10. By moving this collar in one direction against thecam-surfaces of the projection 17 it is obvious that the several blocks will be simultaneously moved inward against a tube or rod, and when the collar is moved toward the head the springs 15 will move the blocks outward. Of course the degree of inward or outward movement depends upon the size of the tube or pipe on which the thread is to be cut.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentg A die-stock comprising a chambered head, atubular extension on said head provided with longitudinal slots, guide-blocks arranged in said slots, bosses extended outward from said blocks at the ends adjacent to the head, lugs on the head to which said bosses are pivoted, springs arranged between the bosses and head, and means for swingingthe guide-blocks inward.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN J. DELEHANT.
