Be it known that I, HERBERT A. DoNALDs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York,.
vsimple and reliable device for similar purposes to those stated and to serve the function of a cleat in a more desirable manner.
In the fastening forming the subject of the presentinvention the surface of the base-plate which is applied to the article or material is smooth and without protuberances, and the surface to which it is applied is preserved and kept smooth and intact without straining or bending' or distortion, and a rounded guard projection or projections are opposed to the hard and substantially rigid and unyielding surface of the base-plate.
My invention includes various features of construction, combined and coacting as hereinafter particularly set forth.
I will now describe the construction ernbodying my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will thereafter point out my invention in claims.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved fastening device applied to an envelop and clamping a cord. Fig. 2 is asection on the line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the fastener before attachment. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4, Fig. 3.
The fastening device is shown in the form of an envelop-fastener and is preferably of sheet metal and in a single piece cut out and struck up by dies, and its principal parts are a base-plate a and a backwardly-bent member 5. ances other than the prongs c whereby it is secured to the material or article on which it is to be used, and has a substantially flat upper or outer surface, having, however, a longitudinal corrugation or rib f, which rises upward or outward toward the backwardlybent member The base-plate thas a lonstrain, as shown in Fig. 2, and when thus clenched these prongs firmly grip the material between the prongs and base-plate and presenting their wide faces in the direction of strain are not liable to tear the material, and the fastener is firmly held and capable of strongly resisting the strains to which it is subjected in the performance of its fastening function. As the laterally -eXtending portions locate their prongs on either side of the direct line of longitudinal strain, the whole strain is distributed over a comparatively wide area and the liability of tearing out the fastening device reduced to a minimum.
The backwardly-bent member has a longitudinally-extending part or tongue l and a lateral extension or ear at each side of the tongue. The tongue l has a longitudinal corrugation or rib fl located over the longitudinal corrugation or rib f of the baseplate. The corrugation or rib f of the vbaseplate commences in close proximity to the point of connection of the tongue with the baseplate, and the corrugation or vrib CZ of the tongue commences at such point of connection, so that between the tongue and baseplate a pocket or trap is formed in which the cord g will be tightly gripped. This pocket or trap is so shaped that tension upon the cord grasped therein tends to pull the cord down toward the base-plate or toward the root of the tongue, thus applying the tension so as to minimize any tendency to raise the IOO tongue or diminish its clamping action. At this pocket the clamping function of the device is performed and the cord is firmly gripped, and added tensionvmerely crowds it more tightly toward the root of the tongue.
The ears e of the backwardly-bent member I) are located at each side of the tongue at a lshort'distance from the point of connection of the tongue with the base-plate. and each is provided with a rounded projection e', eX- tending toward the base-plate and in close proximity thereto, so as to be opposed to the flat and rigid surface of the base-plate. These rounded projections e are guard devic-es, and their function is to prevent disengagement of the cord g by preventing the initial movement toward such disengagement, consisting in the movement backward of an end of .the cord, and this function is effectively performed by reason of the proximity `of these rounded projections to the opposed rigid surfaces of the base-plate. The provision of two of these rounded projections or guard devices causes the cord to be .effectively prevented frorn disengagement when entered in either direction and also prevents disengagement when the cord is not tightly drawn or when the fiap held by the cord is moved toward the fastening device.
The fastening device is shown in operative position in Figs. l and 2 secured to the body L of an envelop and clamping the cord g of the flap z'. The cord is readily guided under the tongue by a simple swinging movement and when pulled passes under theears and into the pocketor trap between the tongue and base. Its final locked position is shown, and it will be firmly held in this locked position without fear of accidental disengagement or working loose or slipping and will be disengageable only by a reversal of the fastening movement with considerable tension to pull it under and clear of the guard projections.
Itis obvious that modifications may be made in the construction shown and above particularly described within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fastening device consisting of a baseplate, a resilient tongue projecting from one edge of and across the base-plate, the baseplate having a longitudinal corrugation conveX on its upper face and originating in close proximity to the root of the tongue and the tongue having a coacting longitudinal corrugation concave on its lower face and originating at the root ofthe tongue.
2. A fastening device consisting of a baseplate, a resilient tongue projecting from one edge of and across the base-plate, coacting longitudinal corrugations on the tongue and base-plate whereby a clamp is provided at the root of the tongue, and an ear projecting laterally from the side of the tongue and provided with a rounded guard projection, this rounded guard projection being clear of the clamped position of the cord and the baseplate having a lateral extension beneath such rounded guard projection and opposing a fiat surface thereto.
3. A fastening device consisting of a baseplate, a resilient tongue projecting from one edge of and across the base-plate, coaeting longitudinal eorrugati-ons on the tongue and base-plate whereby a clamp is provided at the root of the tongue, and ears projecting laterally from the side of the tongue, one on each side thereof, each lear being provided with a rounded guard projection, the rounded guard projections being clear of the clamped position of the cord and the base-plate having lateral extensions `beneath such rounded guard projections and opposing flat surfaces thereto.
