To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLus H. TERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol,Coiinecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Pole Butts, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in the means for securing reels upon fishing rods.

The object of my invention is to improve and simplify such devices.

In the annexed drawings I have shown my device in the form now preferred by me.

Figures 1 and 2 each show a fishing-pole positions in the respective figures, the cork upon the handle of Fig. 1 being in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section upon the line X X of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail showing in partial section a means for locking the handle in place.

In using fishing-rods it is often desirable to be able to shift the point of attachment of the reel from either above the handle tobelow the same, or vice versa. By my invention means which are extremely simple and convenient are provided by which this result may be secured and other advantages attained.

In the device as illustrated, 1 represents the body of the butt, and 2 an elongated sleeve slidably mounted upon said butt and consti tuting a handle-section. The butt is provided with means for engaging an end of the reelbase, and I also employ means at one end of and preferably carried by said handle for holding the other end of said reel-base, although it may not be necessary in all cases to have thereel-holding means carried by the handle. I preferably provide a reel-engaging means at each end of the butt and handle, so that the reel may be secured upon the butt either above or below the handle; but this may not be necessary in all cases.

The means which I prefer for securing the reel, and that which is herein illustrated, consists in a socket member carried by each end of the handle for the reception of one end of the reel-base, as is shown at 5 in Figs. 2 and 4c, and in cooperation therewith a similar socket member 3 and at, one at each end of the butt from the handle. The sleeve of the handlesection 2 is preferably made a sufiiciently close lit about the butt to produce enough friction to hold it in place wherever ad usted.

range of movement is preferably sufiicient to permit securing the reel at either end of the butt. If desired, means for locking this handle-section in place may be provided. I have indicated in Fig. 4 one form of means whereby the handle may be secured in adjusted position. This consists of a ring 5, threaded upon the end of the sleeve 2, the sleeve being longitudinally slit at its end, as at 12, and the threaded portion being slightly coned. Other means for looking it in place may be adopted, if desired. The butt 1 is preferably provided with longitudinal ribs 8, designed to locate the reel-base, and the sleeve 2 may have an inner lining-sleeve 9, which is cutaway to receive said ribs 8 and also to form with the end of sleeve 2' the sockets 11 for the reception of the ends of the reel-base. Each end of the handle may be similarly constructed. Both rings 3 and 4 are provided with similar sockets.

When it is desired to shift the reel from one end of the butt to the other, it is only necessary to move the handle-section back to free the reel-base and then forward to its limit or until it has moved far enough from the socket-piece 3 or 4: at the other end to permit insertion of the reel-base and then back again to engage the base. The whole operation of shifting is a simple one, quickly accomplished, and does not involve removal of any parts or the main portion of the rod, as has been necessary in other constructions, and it will be obvious that the butt may be made much shorter than would be the case if the handle were not slidable on the butt.

It is evident that many detail changes may be made in the construction of my device Without departing from the scope of my invention as claimed. I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described.

What I claim is 1. A fish-pole butt provided at each end with means for holding one end of areel-base, a handle slidable longitudinally on said butt between the same, and means at each end of said handle and adapted to hold the other end of said reel-base, whereby said reel may be held either above or below said handle.

2. A fish-pole butt provided at each end with a socket for holding one end of a reelbase, a handle slidable longitudinally on said butt between the same, and a socket member carried by said butt at each end of said handle and also slidable on said butt and adapted to hold the other end of said reel-base, whereby said reel may be held either above or below said handle.

3. A fishing-pole butt provided with means for engaging a reel-base, and a sliding handle-section upon and forming a part of said butt and provided with means for engaging another portion of said reel-base to clamp the same in position.

A. A fishing-pole butt provided with means toward each end thereof forengaging a reel, a handle-section s'lidably mounted upon the butt between said reel-engaging-means and provided at each end with means for engaging the reel, whereby the reel may 'be secured to the butt eitherabove or below the handle.

5. A fishing-pole butt having a tubular handle-piece adapted to slide upon the butt and at either end to embrace an end of a reel-base, and means at each end of the butt adapted to receive the other end of saidreel-base, whereby the reel may be secured either above or below the handle.

6. A fishing-pole butt having a sliding handle-section, said butt and handle-section being provided with cooperating means,'where by a reel may be secured in place at either end of the handle-section.

7 A fishing-pole butt provided with means for engaging a reel-base, and a sliding han dle-section upon and forming a part of said butt and provided with means for engaging another portion of said reel-base to clamp the same in position, and means for clamping the handle-section in place upon the butt when adjusted.

8. A fishing-pole butt having a sliding handle-section thereon and forming a socket at each end adapted to receive an end of a reelbase, and a similar socket member on the butt beyond each end of the handle, whereby the reel may be secured in place at either end of the handle.

9. A fishing-pole butt having a slidinghandle-section thereon and forming a socket at each end adapted to receive an end of a reelbase, and a similar socket member on the butt beyond each end of the handle, whereby the reel may be secured in place at either end of the handle, and means for locking said handle in place on the butt.
