DAVID B. HOWELL, OF `NEW YORK, N.
Letters .Patent No. 79,761, dated July 7, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANGING SWORDS.
@te tlgthnle merrain im tigen tettctt ateut mit meting part et tige samt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, DAVID B. HOWELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented'a new and improved Means for Hanging Swords; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making aportion of this specification, in Whieh- Figure 1 is a side view of a. sworddlanging device constructed according to my invention Figure 2 is a transverse section of a portion'oi` the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in beth gures.
The object of this' invention is to'provide a cheap and convenient means of suspending swords .from belts, in such manner that the sword may hangin a graceful position, and also allow perfect ease of movement ofthe body to the person Wearing the same. I
The invention consists in a pivoted tubular slide, in combination with the frog or swordplate, and a suitable suspending-chain' or loop, attached to the belt, whereby the desired object is secured.
'Io enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents a belt, of any appropriate materiel, and furnished, at its lower edge, at a suitable distance 7 which is thus suspendedfrom the belt, and constitutes a kind of loop, as shown in fig. l.
Placed upon this .chain BV is a tubular slideO, preferably of cylindrical form, slightly curved in the direction of itslength, and with its 'ends bevelled, so that its upper is shorter than its lower side, as shown in the `just-mentioned iig. 1. The slide O is Vfurnislfeiat each end, with a downwardly-projecting ear, d, the said ears being provided with holes, which receive the ends of a pin or pivot, b", which also passes through the folded upper part ot' a frog or sword-plate, D, as shown in iig. 2, and also in dotted outline in 13g. I.
'Instead of being made of leather, and furnished with af'slot, c, through which the scabbard ci the sword .may bepass'ed, to attach the same tothe frog, the said frog may be made of metal, `and of any suitable or desired wearing or carrying the same, without interfering, in any way, witl construction,"vri'th` any appropriate Vin eans ofV securing the seabbard thereto. When the device'isfn use, the tubular slide' C, moving freely uponV the suspendin'glehain or loop B, and the frog having;` an independent movement upon the pin or pivot, b', by which it is attached to the slide, the sword and scabbard, attached to the frog, as hereinbefore set forth, are enabled to conform or adjust themselves to the movements of the person 1 the freedom of such movements, or the y`comfort of the person, at the same time that the freedom of motion allowed to the fregar enables the sword to hangin a graceful and appropriate position.
What I clairnns my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isfl The tubular slide C, pivoted to the frog or plated), in combination with the suspending-chain B, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose speeied.
D. B. HOWELL.
