PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT o. MILLER, OFDAHLGREN, ILLINOIS.
GRAVE-SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1905.
Application filed October 11, 1904:. Serial No. 228,089-
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. MILLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Dahlgren, in the county of Hamilton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grave-Shields; and I do hereby declare the'following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will flowers in position; and my invention consists of certain novel fezgures ofrcom'bination and construction of parts, as will be hereinafter clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claim. The main objectof my invention, among others, is to provide a convenient portable appliance of the character specified which may be conveniently and cheaply shipped in an unfolded or knocked-down condition and readiiy erected or the parts assembled each in its respective place' Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference be- .ing had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my invention complete, as applied to use. 'Fig. 2is a centrallongitudinal section thereof.
For convenience of reference to the various details and cooperating'accessories numerals will be employed, the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout both views.
In carrying out my invention 1 provide,
I preferably, foursupporting-posts,(designated by the numerals 1, 2, 3, and 4,) each of which should have a sharpened lower end and may be provided at its upper end with an ornamental terminal of any preferred kind, as indicated by the numeral 5. Each of the supporting-posts is provided with a pair of apertured ears 6, said ears being designed to receive an angular extension 7 upon each end of the cross-bars 8 and 9, the latter being the upper cross bars, and are preferably bent near the head-section, as designated by the numeral 10, whereby a portion of. the surface of the guard will be higher than the remaining portion.
It will be seen that the bars or rods 8 and 9 are connected together by a network, as of wire-cloth 11, thus completely inclosing the sides between the end posts. In a similar manner I provide the end sections 12, made of mesh-wire of any, preferred character, the edges of which are joined to the bars 13 and 14,- each of said bars being provided at each end with the loop 15 of proper size to fit around the corner-posts, and when placed thereon are held in position by the apertured ear-sectionsG, as will be clearly obvious by reference to the drawings. A suitable reinforcing-plate 16 may also be provided for one of the end sections, if deemed desirable, said plate not only being a source of reinforcement and strength to the framework, but will also serve as a place for an inscription, if desired.
1 also provide, preferably at the head of the guard, a receptacle, also preferably of meshtop section 18, one end of which is slightly raised, as designated by the numeral 19, the raised portion being at the head of the grave.
The parts of my invention may be made of any preferred material, as galvanized iron or 7 steel or other non-corroding material, and as .the corner posts or supports are entered Into the groundso that the bars 8 and 18 will be at the surface of the ground it will be seen that the grave inclosed by my shield and protectingguard may be covered with growing flowers, while the upper portion of the guard 'or shield may also carry a proper assortment of growing plants or ornamental objects, as shells, &c.' commonly used for this purpose. It is furthermore obvious that growing vines may be trained over my grave shield or guard, so as to entirely envelop the same, thus providing a growing mass of green leaves and Cfiovscrl ers to beautify the resting-place of the Believing that the advantages and manner of constructing the parts of my invention and assembling the same in their operative positions have thus been made clearly apparent, further description is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described guard or graveshield comprising separable side and end sections; corner-posts each having inwardly-directed apertured ears to receive angular extensions on the side sections While the posts are designed to receive ring-like members carried by the ends thereof, said ring-like members being designed to fit around the corner-posts and rest upon said ear-sections; a covering 18 having a raised section 19, said raised section conforming to the shape of the side Walls 11 whereby the head of the shield will be higher than the remaining portion and a receptacle permanently secured to the top section, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALBERT C. MILLER.
