POTATO-PARER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1905'.
Application filed June 18, 1904. Serial No. 213,162.
Tea/Z7 whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, IR IN LINCOLN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Potato-Parers, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in potato-parers; and its object is to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction which can be readily utilized for paring potatoes, for scraping them, and for removing eyes and other undesirable portions from potatoes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of a blade having prongs extending from one end which are bent to form a bit adapted when rotated to cut into a potato, and thus rendered especially adapted for removing undesirable spots or eyes. A slot extends longitudinally through the blade and forms non-alining cutting edges for use in paring potatoes. One edge of the blade is roughened, so as to render the same especially adapted for scraping potatoes.
The invention also consists of the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the blade. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of device, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the blade thereof. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the knifeblade is formed.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a handle having a shank 2 extending into one end thereof, said shank being formed integral with one end of a blade 3, having prongs 4: extending from its other end. These prongs have sharpened edges and are twisted at right angles to the blade and curved to form a bit, whereby circular incision can be made thereby into a potato. A longitudinally extending slot 5 is formed within the blade 3, and said blade is struck in opposite directions at opposite sides of the slot, soas to form cutting edges which are out of alinement with each other. One edge of the blade is roughened, as shown at 6.
In using the device herein described the handle Lis grasped and the face of blade 3 is drawn over the surface of the potato. One
of the cutting edges of said blade will cut the skin from the potato, and said skin will pass through the slot 5. Should it be desired to remove any undesirable spots or eyes from a potato, the prongs 4: are inserted and turned therearound. In this manner the objectionable portion can be readily removed. -.By scraping the potato with the roughened edge 6 of the blade it is not necessary to pare it. This roughened edge is especially adapted to be used upon new potatoes having very thin skins.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modified form of device in which the blade is formed of two sections 7 and 8, which are substantially similar, but one of which has a roughened edge 9, similar to the edge 6, before referred to. These two sections are riveted together adjacent their ends, but are otherwise substantially similar to the device shown in Fig. 1. The ends of the prongs of the tool may, if desired, be cut away, as shown at 10 in Fig. 8, so as to enable them to interlook.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A fruit and vegetable parer comprising a blade having a cutting edge, and a pair of spaced prongs carried at one end of the blade, said prongs having their faces disposed at right angles to the face of the blade and being bent toward each other to present a cutting implement.
2. A fruit and vegetable parer comprising a blade having a cutting edge, and a pair of prongs carried by the blade, said prongs having their side faces arranged at right angles to the side face of the blade, and their ends approached toward each other and overlapped to present a cutting implement.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRVIN LINCOLN.
