Be itknown that I, Gusrav WEDEKIND, of the city of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps for Lamp-Shades; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which i Figure 1- represents one of my lamp-shades and clasps, with a chimney shown in red lines, op which it is held, and by which the chimney is clasped at several points.

Figure 2"represents, in perspective, the clasp separated from the shade. Figure 3 represents the shape and form of clasp as it is punched out of the metal, and before its radial arms arebent into position. Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the separate figures, denote like parts in all of the drawings. My invention consists in a lamp-shade clasp, having three sets of spring-arms, and punched, in a disk-form, inione piece, out of sheet metal, said arms being afterward bent into proper position for holding and steadying the shade to-itself,'and itself to the chimney, without riveting or soldering, and thus very much facilitating the as well as the production of a clasp that is applicable to the varied sizes of chimneys in use, whether large or small. v

To enable those skilled in the art to make and-use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings. I V The disk A is punched out of sheet brass, or othermetal, with four radial arms, a aa a,-fonr radial arms, 5 t b b, and eight short radial arms, a. I mention these numbers becauseI prefer to so make them, buta less number maybe used. These radial arms, instead of being united at acommon centre, are only united to the rim, and project towards a common centre. .T-he riin may be'recessed, embossed, and ornamented, in the act of punching the disk, or afterwards, so as to giveit a conical form, as seen in fig. 1, which adds to itsstitl'ness also.

When the disk is punched, embossed, &c., the arms a are bent upward, the arms b are bent downward, and the clasp being then arranged upon the top ofthe paper or, other shade B, the armsc are bent down againstthe shade, so as to hold it to the clasp, The chimney C is inserted from below, and its tapered form springs out the arms 1 and b, which press against it with suifieient force to hold the shade to said chimney, but freely yield to any expansion of the glass as it becomes heated. The clasp is held to the chimney by eight spring-arms, which thus brace each other in pairs diametricallynpposite to each other, and tendto hold thus more truly and firmly upon the chimney. The shade is also hold to the clasp by-eight clips, which keep it in true position.

But, as before stated, whilst I prefer to use thc'eight spring-arms because they hold better, and pitevent skewing of the-shade, and becauseth ey adapt the clasp to chimneys of the largest as well as the smallest sizes, yet a.

,less number-[nay be'used, as six, for instance, which is the common number, whilst eight, so far as I can learn,

have never been used.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y v A lamp-shade clasp, stamped. out in a disk-form, in one piece, and with radial arms, which are bent into osition to hold the shade to itself, and itself to the glass chimney, substantially as herein described and represented i vGr.
