Letters Patent No. 79,443, dated June 30, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BELT-SHIPPERS.

TO ALLA WHOM IT yMAY CONCERN:
` Be it known that I, ERASTUS BUCK, of Vincennes, in the county of Knox, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Shippers ;A and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and-exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, .and to theletters of reference marked theren, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of a series of pulleys and belts, with my improvement applied thereto. Figure 2, a plan or topl View of the same, and Figure 3 a view of the shipper detached. The object of my invention is to provide a convenient device for shipping belts, by the use of which the wear and rattling of the loose pulley upon the shaft will be obviated, and thebelt pressed towards the surface of the pulley in the operation, instead of being lifted from it; as is ordinarily the case to 4which end my improvements consist in mounting the loose pulley of the primary shaft, fromwhich power is to be communicated, upon a stationary sleeve, which encircles the said shaft, so as to prevent wear or rattling of the loose pulley upon the shaft, when thebelt is shifted to the fixed pulley, and providing the shipper, which shifts the belt, with inclined arms furnished with friction-rollers, together with a projection, which actua'tesa pivoted lever, by means of which the loose pulley is pressed against the fixed one, while the belt is being` shifted.
In the accompanying drawings, which'show a convenient arrangement of parts for carryimg out the objects of my invention, A represents the shaft of the prime mover, which is rotated by the crank A', and B the main or line-shaft, from which power is to be communicated to a `counter-shaft, F. The main shaft C is provided with a pulley, C', which carries a belt, B', passing around a pulley, B, on the shaft A, from which it is driven. The shaft C passes through a sleeve, D, secured to the beam K', upon which sleeve a loose pulley, D', is mounted. A xed pulley,-E, is secured upon the shaft C, adjoining the loose pulley D', over which' a belt, E', passes, to drive the counter-shaft-F, by means of a fixed pulley, F2, secured upon it. The counter-shaft F likewise carries a loose pulley, F1. The belt E' is shifted from the fastto the loose pulleys, and, vz'ce versa., by means of the shipper II, which slit' Vis in the beams K K', in which the shafts have their bearings. Theeshipper H is prol-vided with arms I,.bet\\een which the belt E passes, and by which it is shifted. The arms I have friction-rollers I' upon them, and are set at an angle, converging towards each other, when the shipper passes within the belts, or diverging when it is without. By this arrangement of the arms, the bolt is pressed towards the surface ofthe pulley when shifted, insteadof 'being drawn from it, as is ordinarily tho case. A bent lever, G, is pivoted to the bestial one end of which is forked, to partially embrace the sleeve D adjacent to the loose pulley D': A projection, 7L, upon the side of the shipper Il, bears against the opposite end ofthe le'ver G, and thereby presses the pulley D' against the pulley E, when the belt is shifted from the former Vto the latter.
When thc shipper is moved, to transfer thc belt from the looseto the fast pulleys, thc projection h, striking against the end of the lever G, causes its opposite `end to prcss, the loose pulley D against the pulley E, the i friction thereby produced causing the pulley D to revolve until the bolt has passed from it, when it remains stationary upon the sleeve D, and wear or rattlingiis obviated. The inclined position of thearms I causes the belt to bc pressed up to the surface ofthe pulley while being shifted.
What I cla-iin, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination of the shipper II, pivoted lever G, und pulleys D' E, when arranged and operating substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERASTUS BUCK. Witnesses: I H. A. Bueu,
JAMES S..MAYEs.
