Description

No. 792,719. PATENTED JUNE 20, 1905.
' H. E. E. MOLKENTHIN.
TOOL HANDLE.
APPLIOATION FILED SEPT. 12, 1904.
INVENTOR NITED STATES Patented June 20, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,719, dated June 20, 1905.
Original application filed May 18, 1904, Serial No. 208,548. Divided and this application filed September 12, 1904. Serial No. 224,124.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IERMAN E. E. MOLKEN- THIN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Coeur dAlene, county of Kootenai, and
State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tool-handles, and more especially to hammer-handles, and is adapted for attachment to any suitable head, and the present application is a division of my copending application, Serial No. 208,548, filed May 18, 1904, and is particularly adapted for use with the head described in said application, but is not necessarily so restricted.
The invention has for its object the provisionof means within the handle, whereby certain tools are slidably and removably held within the handle, such as a saw or a rule.
A further object of the invention is the novel way in which these tools are locked in position within the handle and are locked in operable position.
The invention consists of the novel features and combination of parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter and the novel points set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the tool, Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a detail of the handle, showing the saw locked in extended position. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are details of the locking-catch which holds the rule and the saw.
Referring more specially to the drawings, 1 represents the body of the device, to which is secured the handle 2, having the undercut apertures- 3 and 4, the former of which is adapted to receive the rule 5 and the latter adapted to receive the saw 6. The rule and saw are locked in the handle by similar catches secured to the handle and formed from a strip of spring metal 7, having the thumb-piece 8, by which the catch is manipulated, and the locking-lug 9, bent up from the body of the strip 7. This catch is secured to the handle by a bolt passing entirely through the handle and engaging both strips of spring metal and holding them tightly in engagement with the handle.
The reference- numerals 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 describe parts of the hammer forming the subject-matter of my copending application, Serial No. 208,548, filed May 18, 1904, and are clearly described therein, making it unnecessary to enter into a description thereof herein.
I am well aware of the fact that tool-handles have been made which were adapted to carry tools of different descriptions; but I am not aware that a tool-handle has been made which holds the tools in the manner described, and I therefore do not claim, broadly, a tool-handle for carrying other tools; but
WVhat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tool-handle provided with an undercut aperture, a tool slidably and removably mounted in said aperture, and a resilient member provided with a catch secured to the handle within said aperture, said tool provided with an opening adapted to be engaged by the catch when the tool has been removed and reversed in the aperture and in operative position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN E. E. MOLKENTHIN;
Witnesses:
WM. AYERS, EDWARD P. BAUMAN.
