SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,188, dated June 13, 1905. Application filed December 24, 1904. Serial No. 238,251.

To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. AKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ames, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Husking-Pegs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to husking-pegs; and, as will be observed by reference to the following specification and the accompanying drawings, it consists of certain novel features and construction of parts, which I will specilically point out in the claim.

The main object of my invention, among others, is to cushion the point of my huskingpcg, so that the husking-peg proper will be cushioned against a spring of suitable character and will therefore hold the peg normally outward, while the work of thrusting the point of the peg through the husk will be facilitated by the action of the spring.

Other objects and advantages will be fully set forth in the following specication, while in the drawings- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my invention complete. Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal central section as indicated by dotted lines 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig'. 3 indicates a plan view of my invention.

Briefiy stated, my invention consists of a tubular socket secured to a strap or equivalent thereof whereby the said socket may be engaged by the hand of the operator, while within said socket I mount my husking-peg propel', which is cushioned upon a spring.

Referring' specifically to the various parts of my invention and accessories designed to cooperate therewith, 1 designates a tubular socket which is provided with a preferably integral extension 2, whereby said socket is reliably secured to the handpiece 3, consisting of a strap-like member designed to wrap around the hand and have its free end 4 extended through a slot in the extension 5 of the extreme end of the socket. The slotted extension 5 is passed through a slit 6 in the end of the handpiece, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, whereby the strap t may be extended through the slotted opening in said extension and then brought into engagement with the buckle 7, which latter is anchored in place upon the back section or extension 8, which forms an integral part of the handpiece 3, as will be clearly apparent by reference to the drawings.

It will be seen that the lateral extension 2 is secured to the handpiece, as by the rivet 9 or equivalent thereof, so that by said means and the slotted extension 5 the socket 1 is reliably anchored in place. A

I mountwithin the socket the shank 10, having the husking-point 11 of proper extent and curvature to engage the husk of the corn and enable the same to be readily removed from the ear. It will be observed that the shank 10 is provided with a reduced section 12, whereby a shoulden 13 is formed. The reduced portion 12 of the shank is therefore designed to fit loosely within the compressionspring 141, which latter is vmounted in the tubular socket in any suitable way whereby the extreme inner end will be secured against casual withdrawal or movement in either direction, thus leaving the shoulder 13 disposed to bear against the free end of the spring and compress the same as force is brought to bear upon the husking-point 11, as will be clearly apparent.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a cushioned point for engaging the corn-husks and that the said -point is held normally extended ready for the performance of its oiiice.

The various parts of my invention may be cheaply and expeditiously manufactured and readily assembled each in its respective place. Inasmuch as various simple changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention, I desire to comprehend such reasonable equivalents and substitutes as may be regarded as falling fairly within the scope and purview of my invention.

Having thus fully described the construction and manner of using my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
