Be it known that we, J OSEPI-I J .M.OHAUVET, a resident of the borough of the Bronx, in the county of New York, and JOHN W. OOULTER,
a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is l a front View of our machine with the clothplate removed. Fig. 2 isa horizontal section cloth-plate. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same substantially on the line as m of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a cross-section of the same substantially on the line 3 y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan View of a detail in two positions.
The bed, overhanging arm, and the needleactuating mechanism are of known construction, needing no detailed descriptionQas is also the mechanism imparting the forward and backward movements to the looper.
1 is the main shaft, carrying in substantially the same vertical plane with the feed-bar 2 a feed-lifting eccentric or cam 3 and also carrying adjacent thereto an eccentric or cam 4, by which the sidewise-operating mechanism of the looper is actuated.
' 5 is an eccentric-rod extending downwardly, inclined toward the rear of the machine, and connecting the eccentric 4 with the cross-pin 6, by which the plungers 7 and 8 are coupled together. The pin 6 extends through an eye 50 in the eccentric-rod 5 and is in turn provided with an eye 60, encircling a reduced portion of the plunger 8, a suitable nut 80 on said plunger attachingsaid plunger to said eye 60. This construction affords a double swiveled connection between the eccentric-rod 5 and the plunger 8 in that the pin 6 is journaled in the bearing afforded by-the eye 50 of said rod and is free to turn therein, while the plunger 8 is free to turn in the eye 60 of the pin 6, so that it is swiveled to said pin.
9 is a lug fixed to the bed-plateof the machin; and constituting a bearing for the plunger 10 and 11 are lugs fixed to the bed of the machine, which constitute bearings for the plunger 8. The plunger 8 is so connected with the cross-pin 6 as to be capable of an oscillating motion in response to the movement of the connecting-rod 12, by which the forward and backward movements are given to the looper-carrier 13, which is fixed to the front end of the plunger 8.
By the construction just described the looper 14 and its carrier 13 are free to be oscillated by the connecting-rod 12 and at the same time receive the sidewise movement from the eccentrict on the main shaft, throughthe eccentric-rod 5, the cross-pin 6, and the plunger 8. The plunger 7 acts to steady the operation of the cross-pin 6. I
The rod 15 carries at one end the feed-bar 2 and at its opposite end connects with a crosspin 16, mounted on top of a rocker 17. A rod 18 connects the cross-pin 16 with a pin 19, carrying on its end a friction-roller 20, which engages with a slot extending diametrically across the center of the disk 21. Thus by adjusting the position of the friction roller 20 in said slot the length of feed movement may be regulated from nothing up to any desired length. The free end of the rod 15 rests on top of the eccentric 8, and it is provided with a finger 22, whereby the eccentric 3 is spanned.
By the invention above described a maximum in directness of movement, simplicity, and compactness is obtained. The two eccentrics 3 and i are located close together on one side of the main-shaft bearing 23, on the other side of which is located the feed-actuating disk 21. Thus the power for the vertical and horizontal motions of the feed and for the sidewise movement'of the loo per is taken from points of the main shaft grouped closely to its forward bearing in the bed-plate.
The connection between the disk-pin 19 and the feed-bar, including, as itdoes, the rods 18 and 15 and the connecting-pin 16, is so direct as to facilitate greatly the adjustment of the length of feed'through the adjustment of the roller 20. The connection between the eccentric 4 and the looper-carrier 13, through the eccentric-rod 5, the cross-pin 6, and the plunger 8, is also such as to secure a directness of strain exceedingly conducive to steadiness of motion and freedom from lost motion or wear when running at high speeds.
WVe claim 1. In a sewing-machine and in combination, a feed-bar, the main shaft 1 extending parallel with the bracket-arm plane and under and transverse to the said feed-bar, the eccentric 4 on said main shaft, the eccentric-rod 5 extending to the rear of said shaft, the reciprocating and oscillating plunger 8 extending transversely to and underneath said main shaft and underneath and parallel with said feed-bar and having a loose or swivel connection with said eccentric-rod rearward of said shaft, the looper-carrier mounted on said plunger in front of said shaft, the rod 12 extending approximately parallel with said main shaft and by which said plunger and looper-carrier are osclillated, and means for reciprocating said roc.
2. Ina sewing-machine and in combination, a feed-bar, the main shaft 1 extending parallel with the bracket-arm plane and under the said feed-bar, the eccentric 4 on said shaft, the eccentric-rod 5 extending to the rear of said shaft, the cross-pin 6 journaled in said eccentric-rod, the reciprocating plungers 7 and 8 connected by said cross-pin and extending transversely to said plane, a swivel connection between said plunger 8 and said cross-pin at the rear of said shaft,a looper-carrier mounted on and reciprocating with said plunger in front of said shaft, the rod 12 by which said looper-carrier and the said plunger 8 are oscillated, and means for reciprocating said rod.
3. In combination, the main shaft, the eccentric thereon, the eccentric-rod 5 extending rearwardly from said shaft and provided with an eye, the cross-pin journaled in said eye, the parallel plungers 7 and 8 connected with the opposite ends of said cross -pin, and a looper-carrier mounted on said plunger 8 in front of said shaft.
4. In a sewing-machine, the combination with a feed-bar, the main shaft 1 extending parallel with the bracket-arm plane and under the said feed-bar, the eccentric 4 on said shaft, the eccentric rod 5 extending rearwardly from said shaft, the reciprocating and oscillating plunger 8 extending to the rear and to the front of said shaft transversely to said plane and below and parallel with said feedbar, the stationary bearings 10 and 11 for said plunger arranged, respectively, in the rear and in front of said shaft, a swivel connection between said plunger and said eccentric-rod in the rear of said shaft, the looper-carrier mounted on and reciprocating with said plunger in front of said shaft, the rod 12 extending approximately parallel with said shaft and by which said plunger and looper-carrier are oscillated, and means for reciprocating said rod.
5. In combination, the feed-bar, the shaft 1 extending parallel with the bracket-arm plane and under the said feed-bar, the looper-operating and feed-operating eccentrics 4 and 3 side by side on said shaft, the eccentric-rod 5 extending rearwardly of said shaft, the reciprocating and oscillating plunger 8 extend ing to the rear and to the front of said shaft transversely to said plane, under said feedoperating eccentric and parallel with said feed-
