PATENT QFFICEO LIZZIE RODNEY, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING DEVICE.
NOL-LVQIJIOEES forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 790,515, dated May 23, 1905. Application filed September 29, 1904. Serial No. 226,452.
To all whom it may concern: Be 1t known that I, LIZZIE RODNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York,
in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FasteningDevices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved fastening device designed particularly for use in connection with a shoelace, so as to prevent the knot when once tied from coming untied, but which also may be employed for the purpose of fastening ladies collars at the back of the neck; also, as a cloak or coat fastener; also, as an ordinary safety-pin and for various other purposes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated bysuitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a shoe the lacing of which is tied and secured by myimproved fastening device; Fig. 2, a plan view of the fastening device detached; Fig. 3, a similar view of a fabric covering used in the construction of the device; Fig. 4, a bottom plan view of the fastening device; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4 and-on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 6, a view similar to Fig. 5, but showing a modification.
In the drawings forming part of this SPGOI". fication my improved fastening device is shown circular in form; but this form is not absolutely necessary, as the said device may be made of any desired shape or form, and in the form of construction shown said device consists of an annular body portion a, having a central circular opening a and the back of which is provided with a pin 6, hinged at one side, as shown at V, and adapted to engage a catch-hook b? at the opposite side, the attachment and operation of the pin 1) belngsimilar to that of an ordinary safety-pin.
- The annular body portion a consists of a front plate 0 and a bac plate d, and the front plate 0 is provided at lts perimeter with a It will be observed that the pin 1) is hinged to the outer edge of the plate (1 at one side, and the catch-hook is connected with the opposite edge of said plate, and the inner annular wall of the device-formed by the flange c is about half the transverse width or thickness of the outer annular wall of said device.
The front plate 0, the inner annular wall formed by the flange or rim 0 of said plate, and the outer annular wall formed by the flange or rim 0 of the plate 0 are all provided with a textile, fabric, or other covering 6, which consists of an annulus cut from any preferred or suitable material and which is clamped in position when the separate parts of the annular body portion are secured together, which last operation is performed by a suitable machine or tool, and as thus constructed it will be seen that all the visible parts of the device when said device is in use are covered by the textile, fabric, or other covering e.
The covering e, when employed, may be of any desired color, and the parts a and b of the body portion of the device may be made of any preferred material. The covering e, however, is not absolutely essential, and, if desired, the fastening device may be made of gold, silver, or other metal, and the said device may thus be made to serve as an ornament as well as a fastening deivce without the use of the covering e, this construction being shown in Fig. 6, but when said covering is employed the device may be made of cheap metal, such as tin or brass.
In Fig. 10f the accompanying drawings I have shown a shoe provided with a lacing f, which is tied in a double bow in the usual manner, and when my improved fastening device is used for securing the tie of a shoelacing the pin 1) is passed through the central portion f of the knot and the body portion of the fastening device is swung down over the knot and the pin b is secured to or connected with the catch-hook b, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. This forms a very ornamental fastening device for this purpose, and, if desired, the ends of the bow and the ends of the lacing may also be passed through the central opening a of the fastening device. It will also be apparent that this device may be used for the purpose of fastening the ends of a ladys collar at the back of the neck, and it may also be used as a button for securing a cloak, coat, or shawl, and in addition to these purposes it may be employed as an ordinary safety-pin wherever such devices are re uired.
aving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastening device comprising an annular body portion composed of an annular front plate and an annular back plate, the front plate being provided at its inner edge with an inner flange which overlaps the inner edge of the back plate and both of said plates being provided at their outer edges with overlapping flanges, the back plate being inclined from its outer edge inwardly toward the front plate, and a fastening-pin arran ed radially of the back plate, substantiall y as shown and described.
2. A fastening device comprising an annular body portion composed of an annular front plate and an annular back plate, the front plate being provided at its inner edge with an inner flange which overlaps the inner edge of the back plate and both of said plates being provided at their outer edges with overlapping flanges, the back plate being inclined from its outer edge inwardly toward the front plate, and a fastening-pin arranged radially of the back plate, said front plate being also rovided with an annular flexible covering eld in place by the flanges at the inner and outer edges thereof, substantially as shown and described.
3. A fastening device of the class described, comprising a body portion having a central 0 ening and composed of front and back p ates, the front plate being provided at its inner edge with an inwardly-directed flange or rim which overlaps the inner edge of the back plate, and both of said plates being provided at their outer edges with overlapping flanges, the back of the device being concave in cross-section and provided with a fastening-pin arran ed transversely thereof, substantially as shown and described.
4. A fastening device of the class described, comprising a body portion. having a central opening and composed of front and back plates, the front plate being provided at its inner ed e with an inwardly-directed flange or rim w hich overlaps the inner edge of the back plate, and both of said plates being provided at their outer edges with overlapping flanges, the back of the device being concave in cross-section and provided with a fastening-pin arranged transversely thereof, the front plate of the device being also provided with a covering which is secured thereto by the flanges at the inner and outer edges thereof, substantially as shown and described.
5. A fastening device of the class described, comprising a body portion having a central opening and composed of front and back plates, the front plate being provided at its inner edge with an inwardly-dirccted flange or rim which overlaps the inner edge of the back plate, and both of said plates being provided at their outer edges with overlapping flanges, and the back plate being provided with a fastening-pin arranged transversely thereof, substantially as shown and described. i
6. A fastening device of the class described, comprising a body portion having a central opening and composed of front and back plates, the front plate being provided at its inner edge with an inwardly-directed flange or rim which overlaps the inner edge of the back plate, and both of said plates being pro vided at their outer edges with overlapping flanges, and the back plate being provided with a fastening-pin arranged transversely thereof, the front plate and outer walls of the device being also provided. with a covering held in place by the flanges at the inner and outer edges of the front plate, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of September, 1904.
LIZZIE RODNEY.
