PATENT OFFICE.
ELISA E. ROBERTSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 790,314, dated May 23, 1905. i v I Application filed July 29 1903. Serial No. 167,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIsA E. ROBERTSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to suspenders, the primary object of the invention being to provide suspenders for trousers especially adapted for use in warm weather, the same being constructed in such manner as to allow a thorough circulation of air around the shoulders, chest, and back and obviate the binding effect presentwithsuspenders of the ordinary construction.
It is also an object of this invention to construct the suspenders in the main of light porous washable material which may be easily cleaned, the elastic portions of the suspenders bein detachable for that purpose; also, to manu acture the suspenders in such a way that theymay be worn either over or under the shirt, being therefore especially adapted to the blouse-shirt or shirt-Waist at present so popular and fashionable.
With the above general objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a shirt, showing the suspenders applied thereto beneath the shirt, the suspenders being represented by dotted lines and portions of the suspender-ends in full lines where they project through the slits or openings in the shirt. Fig. 2 is a reverse view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the body portion or yoke of the suspenders. Fig. 4 is an enlarged front elevation of the sus enders complete.
ike reference-numerals designate corresponding parts-in all the figures of the drawm s.
The invention resides mainly in what may be termed a yoke, which is shown inv plan in Fig. 3, the same comprising the body portion 1 and the diverging flaps or shoulder The yoke as a whole is formed of strong cellular or open-mesh fabric, so that it may e washed whenever it becomes soiled. ,When the yoke is in position on the person of thewearer, the bodyportion extends down and all the way across the back,'whilethe flaps 2 extend over the shoulders and downward over the chest, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. By preference the body portion 1 is formed in a separate piece from the front flaps 2 in order that the strands of the fabric mayrun lengthwise of both the bodyportion and flaps, thereby giving greater strength to the yoke, the direction of the weavebeing illustrated in Fig. 3, wherein it will be seen that thefront flaps 2 are joined tothe body portion 1 by shoulder lapseams 3. The edge adjacent to theneok of the wearer is provided with a reinforce strip or band 4, While the opposite side edges of the yoke are provided with reinforce strips 5, Which add materially to the strength of the yoke. The lower edgeof thebodyportion 1 is provided with a hem 6, and the extremities of the front flaps are also hemmed,'as shown at 7. Two eyelets or metallic buttonholes 8 are secured to the hem 6, while a single eyelet or metallic buttonhole 9 is applied to the hem 7 on each of the front flaps, the said eyelets being adapted to receive the suspender-ends, as shown best in Fig. 4. Each suspenderendin the preferred embodiment of this invention comprises an elastic strap 10, provided at its upper end with a clip 11, having a headed stud 12, adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the adjacent eyelet or buttonhole piece. The front suspender-ends may also be provided with takeup buckles 13 and snap loops or straps 14, whereby the stra s 10 may be disconnected from the termina straps or suspender-ends 15 for the convenience of the wearer. No special claim to novelty is made for the suspender-en ds, however, except that when combined with the yoke they provide for the necessary elasticity or yielding of the suspenders as a whole by reason of the elastic stra s 10 referred to. This renders the suspen ers as a whole comfortable in use. The portions of the yoke which pass over the shoulders provide a broad bearing for the suspenders, and being thin and porous they the elastic straps are etached from the yoke,
whereupon the latter may be washed in the ordinary manner.
By roviding the shirt (indicated at 16) with s its or openings 17 in the front and back the suspenders may be worn under the shirt and the suspender-ends passed through the slits or openings and connected with the button on the trousers. Preferably the slits or openings 17 are arranged sufficiently low to allow a full effect to the exposed portion of the shirt, the result being that the fullness around the waist will conceal the Suspender-ends. If desired, a scarf or other form of belt may be worn around the Waist, and the latter will also aid in concealing the Suspender-ends; Under the arrangement described the weight of the trousers will be borne by the suspenders and not be thrown upon the hi s, which occasions the use of a belt fastene tightly around the waist.
Having thus described the iIlV611'tiOl1,Wl]:lt I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described suspenders, comprising three sections formed entirely of openmesh material, one of said sections having converging side edges and an inwardlycurved end edge, the other edge being turned over and secured to form a hem, the other sections being secured to the said first-named section on opposite sides of its inwardlycurved portion, a reinforcing-band secured to the inwardly-curved edge of the said firstnamed section and to the last-named sections, reinforcing-bands extending along the outer edges of all said sections for their entire lengths, and means carried by each of said sections for securement to a garment.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELISA E. ROBERTSON.
