IMPROVED GAR-WHEEL.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Beit known that I, W. R. THOMAS, of Oatasauqua, in the county of Lehigh, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the a'rt to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in car-wheels made o'f cast metal, whereby it is designed to provide a. more durable Wheel, and which is less liable to be a'ected by unequal contraction or Vexpansion than any now in use.

And it consists in a more improved form` of' the wheel, whereby the metal is disposed in a manner better` calculated to seeure the aforesaid objects, as will be more fully described on reference to the'aceompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a side elevation ot' my improved wheel, and

4In casting my improved wheel, I arrange the mould and provide a core so as to form a hollow enlargement aroundthe hub, as shown at A, and hollow arms, B, communicating with the said hollow enlargement, and running outward to the tread, and a thin webbing of metal between the said arms, also connecting with the rim and the said enlargement;

I have foundhvery great advantages resulting from the above-desribed disposition of the metal of castmetal wheels, in the respect of great strength, and `freedom from liability to crack from unequal contraction and expansion in cooling, when cast. Y

I claim as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent A cast-metal oar-wheel, provided with the hollow enlargement A, hollow arms B, communicating with the.

same, and the in-turning thin metal webbing, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described. i
