Be it known that I, lJAMES' C. ARMS, of Northampton, `in the county of Hampshire, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain-'new'and useful Improvements in Clasps for PocketBooks, die.; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyn ing drawings, making part 4of this .,speciiication," and tojtbc letter-sof reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.

To enable others-skilled inthe art to construct and use my invcntionI will proceed to describe it.

My invention consists in a novel construction of a clasp, for use ,on pock'ctfbookg belts, Suspenders, and all similar articles, as hereinafter more fully explained. I

Figure 1 represents a pocket-book, m perspective, with my improved clasp applied thereto.

Figure 2 is a plan view of the blanks, of whichthe clasp is made, before being formed up.

To construct myimproved clasp,'I irst strike or cutout of sheet metal a rectangular piece, B, with a small strip, o, projectingcentrally from'each end, as shown in iig. 2. Upon the i'ace of this blank, near one end, I then raise aninclined projection, c, which may be done by striking it np with a die from the under side,

las represented more clearly in fig. 3, or by soldering a piece on` its face, as in tig. 5, the bbject in both cases being to make a raised-surface nearone end,'upon which the strap is to beclasped and held by a slide, c, as

hereafter explained. 4 l To form this slide, I strike or cut out a small strip of sheet metal, as represented by c, iig. 2, of such a length as to reach across the face of the piece B, and have its ends bent around,so as to clasp or engage against -the under side of B, as shown more clearly in tig. 6, the dotted lines on c,`g. 2,sl1owing wherethe bends are "formed in the strip to give it the required form. This slide is to bc so formed that when itis slipped on to the `piece B, there will be a small space left between the inner faces Vof the two, of suiicient size to permit the strap to be inserted between them, when the slide is shoved down to the thin or i'lat end of B.

.The piece B s bent transversely, at aright angle, at thepoints indicated by the dottedlines on B, iig; 2, so that when the piece is attached to the pocket-book or other article, by insertingrthe tangs o through holes, and bending them down on the inside, as shown in g. 4, there shall be space-enough left between the under side of B and the face of the ai'ticle to which it isl attached, to permit the'v slide c to movc'freely thereon, as represented in figs. 3, 4, and 5. Instead of constracting-the piece B with the raised or inclined face e, the same object may he accomplished by forming the blank, B, with inclined sides, as represented'by the red lines in iig. 2, and then'bending these inclinededges downfafta'right angle, thus forming an inclined lip, Z, :as show 'n invig. 4; and this form is preferred where it is desired to make alarga clasp, as these*lips-render the piece B, more rigid and unyielding. v y -1f vThe face c, whether plain or raised, may be ronghened by grooves or checks, to hold the strap more firmly,
