DASENBROOK, of `Warreuville, 'in the county of vDu Page, and State of Illinois, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Weather-Strips; andtwe do herebyV declare and make known thaLthefollowing 4is `a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of' this specication.

Our said invention consiste in a novel` arrangement for closing the space between the threshold and the v door, for the purpose of excluding the cold, rains, dust, or snowft'rom the house, which weather-strip automatically closes 'said space when the door is closed togethenbut doesnot in any manner interfere with the opening of'4 the door when desired, this invention being an improvement upon the device patented by E. C. Mathewson, May 16, 1848. llilo enablejthose'skilled linthe art to'understaud how toeonstruct andv use our said invention, we will procecd to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of our invention, the door being opened, showing also a roller uponA the jamb to close the strip, and

Near the lower edge of the door lis secured, by screws vpassing through holes in its upper edge, a metallic strip, B, its lower edge, when forced down, as hereinafter described, resting closely upon the door-sill "E, but rising above the bottom of the'doo-r, whenthe door is open, as hereinafter specified.

The strip B is secured to thedoor by the.se1ewscor otherwise, Vso as to move thereupon" as upon n hinge,

as hereinafter set forth.

Above the strip B is secured another strip', D, itsedge projecting over the strip B, as shown, -to keep the rain fromrentering the joint of the strip B and Yentering 'the house. l

InV a recess made in the door, beneath the said strips, as indicated`l in thedrawings, is arranged a spiral spring, S', onecnd of which rests against the upper en'dlot` said recess, while to the other end of said spring is secured a bar, s, which is itselt` secured to an arm, b, attached lto the strip B, as clearly shown in fig. 2.

By this arrangement it will be seen that thc spring S acts to throw the lower edge oi' the' strip BJ up from the door-sill, and retain it up while the door, remains open.

l Upon that side of the door oppositethe hinges there is'arra-nged a small roller, W, fastened to Vthe'jau'ib by a screw, or other pin, so that said roller may freely turn or revolve.

The object of this, roller isto press Vdown the strip B when the door is closed, to press its lower edge-upon the door-sill,

` When the door is being closed, the lower cdgeof the strip B passes beneath the roller, and is thereby gradually forced down as the' door continues toclose,`until, when-the door is shut, the edge ot' the strip B lies" closely down upon thedoor-sill, thus e'ectually closing the space beneath the door, excluding -the cold,` snow, wind, dust, or rain, as desired. i I
