Be it known that I, KARL SCHLIEPMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in St. Charles, in the county of St. Charles and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Car Seats and Berths, of which the following' is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a car-seat so constructed as to be converted into lower and upper sleeping-berths.

2 designates the bottom of a seat supported by a frame 3 and extending longitudinally of Fig. II is a verseat-bottom, so that they may be swung from an upright position at the ends of the seatbottom, as seen in full lines, Fig. I, into horizontal positions at an elevation above the seatbottom 2, as seen in dotted lines, Fig. I, and full lines, Figs. II and V.
6 designates stays that are pivoted at 7 to brackets 8, secured to the seat yend sections 4 adjacent to their lower ends, as seen most 'clearly in Fig. III. These stays are free of connection with the seat end sections 4 at their ends opposite those connected to the brackets and at these last-named ends are provided With hooks 9.
10 designates socket-boxes secured. to the partitions 1 at the sides oil the seat end sections 4, each box being provided with an opening, as seen most clearly in Fig.' IV, through which the free ends of the stays 6 enter said boxes to permit of the hooks 9 engaging shoulders 11 at the bottoms of the In each socket-box is a socket-box, and to each socket-box is secured a spring 13, bearing against said door and serving to hold the door closed when the Jfree end of the corresponding stay is not seated in the socket-box.
A 14 designates a latch-bar, one end of which is pivoted to one ofthe seat end sections 4 at l5. (See Figs. I and V.) The latch-bar is provided with a hook 16,pivoted thereto rearward from an extension-arm 14 of the latchbar.
17 is a pin or button with which the latch bar is adapted to engage, this pin or button being set into the 'seat end section opposite to that equipped with the latch-bar.
18 is a stop secured to the seat end section i equipped with the latch-bar and against which said latch-bar is adapted to rest when the seat end sections are swung into horizontal positions and are connected by the latch.
When my convertible seat and berth is in use as a sofa, the parts thereof are in the condition seen in Fig. I, the Aseat end sections 4 being in lowered condition, and the stays 6 are in folded condition at the rear of said end sections. Whenit is desired to convert the parts into condition for service as lower and upper berths, the seat end sections are swung upwaidly into horizontal positions, as seen in the hooks 9 introduced into the socket-boxes- 10 to serve as supports for the seat end sections in their horizontal positions. When the seat end sections are raised into their horizontal positions, the latch-bar 14 is positioned with its free end lying upon the pin or button 17 in the seat end section containing it, and,due to the hook 16 or' the latch-bar engaging said pin or button and the latch-bar resting against the stop 18, as seen in Fig. V, the meeting ends of the sections 4 are held firmly together in their horizontal positions.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a convertible car sofa and berth, the combination of partitions spaced apart, a seatbottom located between said partitions, seat end sections hinged to said partitions above said seat-bottom and adapted to be swung upwardly into horizontal positions, stays hinged to said end sections, and socket-boxes attached to said partitions and adapted to receive the free ends of said stays, substantially as set forth.
2. In a convertible car sofa and berth, the combination of a seat-bottom. seat end sections surmounting said seat-bottom and having hinged supports at their upper ends to permit of their being swung into horizontal positions, means for supporting said seat end sections in horizontal positions, and means `for connecting the free ends of' the sections when they are in horizontal positions; said last-named means comprising a latch-bar pivoted to one of the sections and provided with an extension arm, a latch pivoted to said latch-bar rearward of the extension-arm, a
pin on the other seat-section for engagement with said extension-arm and said latch, and a stop for engagement with the upper face of said latch-bar, substantially as set forth.
