UMBRELLA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,237, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed May 9, 1904. Serial No. 206,970.
be it known that l, haANvILLn TURNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of 'lacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of ll'ashington. have invented a new and improved Umbrella, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in umln-ellas. the object being to provide an umbrella so constructed that upon removing a member from the umbrella-stick the umbrella will be rendered useless to any one excepting the rightful owner, who has a means for restoring the umbrella to its useful condition.
l will describe an umbrella embodying my invention. and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of a portion of an umbrella embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, showing the position of parts when the umbrella is made useless. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lUCh'illgOl safetydevice employed. Fig. & is a section on theline .1 .1 of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 1 1 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an umbrella stick or staff having a reduced portion 2 at its upper end which corresponds generallv to the tip of an umbrella-staff. Formed in the shoulder portion 5) at the junction of the reduced portion of the staff with the enlarged portion is a recess l for receiving a lug 5, formed in the inner side of the notch 453, to which umbrella ribs '7 and the cover s are secured in the usual manner. This engagement of the lug 5 in the recess l will prevent rotary movement of the umbrellacover when the parts are in normal position.
A. spring 9 is coiled around the umbrellastaff and at its lower end is connected therewith. while its upper end engages against the under side of the notch 6 when the parts are in normal or useful posit-ion.
liemovably mounted on the reduced portion :2 of the staff is a locking or safety device consisting of a sleeve 10. having a longitudinal runway, here shown as a slot 11, opening outward at the bottom and having a rightangle offset 12 at the upper end, said offset having a depression 12. This runway is designcd to receive a pin 13 on the reduced portion 2 of the umbrella-staff. The lower end of the sleeve is bell-shaped, as indicated at ll, and to prevent water from passing between the interior of the notch 6 and the staff I employ a hood l5, which is secured to the ring 6 and engaged by the sleeve 10. \Vhen the umbrella is in use, the parts are in the position indicated in Fig. 1. \Vhen the owner desires to place the umbrella in a rack or other place temporarily, the sleeve 11) is to be moved slightly down to release the pin from the depression 12', the hood being sufficiently resilient to permit this movement, and then r0- tated until the pin 13 passes into the longitudinal portion 11 of the runway in the sleeve, and then the sleeve may be removed, so that the spring 9 will force the notch carrying the cover upward, as indicated in Fig. 2. As the runway ll will be of different lengths in different sleeves, it is obvious that a great number of combinations may be made, so that the sleeve of one umbrella will not operate in connection with another umbrella for which it was not intended.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an umbrella, a staff having a reduced upper end, a notch mounted to slide relatively to the staff, means for locking the notch in engagement with the staff to prevent rotary movement when in normal position, and a spring for moving the notch lengthwise of the staff, and carrying the ribs and cover therewith.
2. An umbrella comprising a staff havinga reduced upper end and provided with a recess at the junction of the reduced portion and enlarged portion, a notch movable lengthwise of the staff, a lug on the inner side of said notch for engaging in said recess, a spring surrounding the staff and connected at its lower end thereto and engaging at its upper end with the notch, a sleeve for removably en- Ward at the bottom and having an offset at the upper end, the said sleeve having a bellshaped lower end, and a pin extended from the stat? for engaging in said slot.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses;
GRANVILLE TURNER. Witnesses W. H. MILLER, WV. S. BERDON, Jr.
